Cheers New2Landies, I reckon that might be it. If the washers compress at all during installation then the fact I didn't replace them could well cause a problem. Parts ordered, crying like a little girl on hold, hoping that all is well after fitting. Thanks again.

As far as I understand it a thicker head gasket will just lower the compression a little and shouldn't really be a problem. Of course if you have the head skimmed this will increase the compression by a little so a thicker gasket would be good.
