Thanks again. Don't think it's dirty fuel. Tanks new and the in line filtre is clean. Thanks for the explanation of vapour lock. I think I can rule that out. the carb was definately cold the last time it played up although the inlet manifold was hot. I'll come back once I've taken the spacer out...

Thanks Worf I'll give the carb on manifold no spacer a go. The more I look at this the more I think it is a fuel air mix problem. Sorry for the numpty question but what is vapour lock. I always wanted to gen up on engine mechanics but now I've bought a series 1 it seems to be a necessity.

I
Thanks for that.
Mine will also do a complete refuse to start. Repeated start attempts with not a hint of starting then after about 5 mins will immediately fly in to life with a good start. (No half way house.)
The carb was bought off ebay. It had never been fitted but had sat on the shelf...

OK. Here's the problem.
I have an 86" late 2L engine series 1. The only none standard feature is a 34 ICH Weber carb.
It runs fine when cold but as soon you take it on a bit of a run and it gets up to temp it starts to sound asthmatic and stalls it you come to a stop. It will restart (Just)...

The above is good advice. Apart from a few missing bits and a few none S1 stuff it looks in really great condition. Buy it and get it back to how it should look in your own time. You'll wind up with a nice example that you can use.

Thanks for the quick replies.

OK. After hours of tinterweb searching I give up.
Where can I buy a starter motor for my S1 86". It is a 1955 2 litre petrol and it's the late 2 litre engine.
Cheers.
Nick.

I
Thanks for that.
Not found a head yet. I suspect these are going to be like the proverbial rocking horse>>>>>>>>>

I have a 1955 2L 86" series 1.
I'm fitting a Weber 34 ICH carb and a K&N filter.
I've been told that you can fit a high compression cylinder head from a Rover P4 60.
Anyone done it or know anything about this.
It's never going to be a pigeon catcher but I do use it and a bit more umph would be...

I
Cheers mate.
It's the same one so good news. (Mine was second hand with the inlet manifold for £80.)
Thanks again

I
Thanks for the reply Worf. Will fit one but still not sure which which to go for.
Single choke 34mm or the one advertised which is a twin 28/36
-
I
OK Mine has just arrived. It is a single carb marked up '34'.
Is thsi ok or is the twin better.
I read that the solex carb fitted is 24mm choke.

I've got a 2003 Defender 90 TD5. I want to replace the cat with a straight through downpipe. Stainless steel if poss. Can someone point me in the right direction.
Anyone else done this?
Thanks.
Nick.
