Could be leak off pipes right enough. The sound deadening pad on the rocker box wears through the pipes, I had mine replaced a while ago for this very reason.

I read somewhere that a lot of earlier ( pre suffix F ?) transfer boxes had mods done to them by L/R to overcome the bad oil circulation to the mainshaft. L/R then daubed paint somewhere to show the box had the mod. Any ideas what the virtual respray of my transfer box means? Its a 95 300tdi...

I rarely have to change down to third on normal hills, maybe if there's speed bumps up the hill, third is more appropriate at 30, but even quite steep hills I can get up in 5th with all seats full, as long as I'm doing over 50, the speed doesnt drop. Yours sounds like its quite low geared too...
