The top of the nut is 8mm down. There is only room for a socket, a ring spanner wont work.

I tried the last suggestion, the nut is deep inside, no room for a spanner and if I use a socket how can I stop the rotation. Would a vice damage the pulley?

Hoe gaan dit
I have a 96 TDI with a peeling dash. I lifted dash from window edge, removed the foam with had stiffened and could not be re-shaped. I replaced the foam with a 10mm HD soft foam ,using contact adhesive restuck the dash. A bit tricky but it worked.
