VCU and bearings were brand new from Island 4x4 so wouldn't expect there to be any problems. Is there some procedure that should be followed when replacing VCU/bearings to ensure that they are balanced or aligned properly?

How would the key start the car without the transponder chip? Or is there a recess in the key body to fit your existing chip?

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I will try a new pair of rear tyres with a 'less blocky' tread pattern to start, if unusual wear continues I'll get the alignment checked and if it's still the same after that I'll just have to accept it as a characteristic of the car.
