okay so what would you do then, fit the ftc 3271 and 3270 or stick with the original of the two piece shafts with drive flange?
-
H
So i presume that FTC 3270 and FTC 3271 would fit then as they have 24 splines?

Removed shaft again this morning, the td5 shafts have got 24 splines at both ends. Does this mean you could put the fixed one piece shafts on that have got 24 splines on the diff end

Land Rover Defender front axle. Spline wear. - YouTube
The ones on mine look like that the shaft sticks out of the flange like you see in this video and then there is a circlip which holds the shaft from slipping and then a plastic dust cover goes over the lot. Ive got wheels back on now but...

I think i will remove the shaft fully tomorrow so i can inspect both spline ends just to double check.
But your saying fit those other shafts instead of the heavy duty terrafirma flanges?

ah i see so theres a good chance that replacing this gasket will stop that leak then!
Had a look on ebay genuine seal is £34 ish there is a bearmach one for £6.99 though. Any suggestions?
Also will the seal alone stop any leaks or does it need any gasket sealant applying to it at the same time...

I seem to be having a tiny oil leak from the rocker cover on the td5 engine.
I removed the black plastic engine cover and then have checked that all 13 8mm bolts were all torqued up properly.
It seems that all the bolts are tight but there is a tiny weep still coming at the bulkhead end...

No my half shafts are the ones where they stick out of the drive flange at the end with a circlip and dust cover over the teeth.

I decided to inspect my rear half shafts on my 2004 td5 defender 90.
I removed the wheel took off the plastic dust cover on the rear half shaft andbefore going further i could visibly see play between the shaft and the drive flange by slowly rotating it.
Obviously i need to replace these...

Ah I see, someone told me that the preload was achieved on the bearings by the tightness of the bolt onto a crush washer. If tightening it up just tight won't knackered axle up then that's what I'll do.

No one seems to have definitely confirmed how tight you are supposed to tighten the drive flange back up. I just don't want to knacker the bearings.
Will check axle breathers first I replaced all oils a few months ago filled them so it just trickles out of axle filler hole

I have a 2.5litre 2004 defender 90 county station wagon that's done 64,000 miles. Both my front and rear axles are dripping a small amount of oil. It looks like the pinion oil seals must be the culprits where the prop shafts connect.
I know the td5 uses a special crush washer on the bearings...

Also whilst doing this job is it worth checking the pinion bearing? Someone told me it was easy to check whilst doing this at the same time?

What do you have to do when re tightening the retaining but? Just tighten it backup to exactly where it was before? For the correct pressure on the bearings?
