Check the wiring that goes from the engine to the ECU, you'll most probably find oil / water will have made its way from the engine harness to the ECU giving you these problems.
Normally a case of drying it all out and all should be well.

So - I am deep into the rebuild of my S3 which I bought (for too much money) which is a 3.5 v8 in it.
What started as a camshaft replacement has now escalated to a full strip to chassis and build back up with other period correct parts I have...
So I managed to find a decent 2 1/2 petrol 3MB cylinder head at Malvern this weekend. It’s cleaned up really well and not bad for £20. The number on my head is ERC 5899 but the other is 568750.

I had this, found it was one of the springs on the rear which was pulling the cylinder back in. Check springs :)
Mine was 3 & 8 on the pic above. rather than go to the stud on the back plate the spring went shoe to shoe
