Finally got round to checking, small wire was live, relay on bulkhead clicking happily. Took new starter motor off, bench checked (well, pavement....) dead as a door nail! Cleaned every earth I could find, put power to old motor, spun. Replaced it, turned the key - sorted!!! Thanks for your...

Classic with 200tdi fitted, ages ago, been running OK until now. Ignition on, turn to start position - nothing. Had been playing up, so new motor obtained, fitted , still nothing. Then bench tested "old" motor (yes, I know, should have done that first but...) spun like a good'un! Cables...
