Mine runs the same on cold mornings but is fine once the weather warms up. TD4 seem to need a bit of heat in the engine before they work properly. I've got 120K on mine and runs fine apart from at initial start up.
I wouldn't worry about it at all.

With me it was pin holes in the heater inlet pipe to the heater matrix. Fixed 3 years ago with K seal. Never leaked since.

I have been running my Freelander TD4 on the special diesels of Esso and occasionally Shell with a marked increase in performance and fuel economy up from 29 to 32 ( it is an auto).
The other day I was running low and put in 10 litres of Texaco normal diesel, they don't seem to do an uprates...

TD4's do this when the engine is cold it won't change up until you are doing around 35 mph. If you read the manual it is to assist the warm up of the engine. It only happens in winter with the engine cold, rarely in summer.
Hope this helps.

Try leaving starting it for a few seconds after the glow plug light goes out.

I sometimes have the same problem, and have always put it down to a cold engine. With mine it is always in winter or on cold mornings very rarely in summer. The engine has done it since I've owned the car. I think it might be something to do with a slight down gradient in front of my house...

That is what they told me it needed. They also replaced the torque converter checked everything else, new oil etc.
I had it done Feb this year and no problems at all since. What would you expect it to cost? This was not the cheapest or dearest but did have the best no quibble warranty.

Same thing happened to me, everything OK except no reverse. Reverse band had gone cost me £1450 plus vat for fix with two year warranty.
I used Gravesend Auto repairs. Excellent service

Also the panic when you have accidentally put it into manual mode when parked and cannot under stand why the lever won't move out of park with your foot on the brake.

I have a 52 plate TD4 auto and use it every day long and short trips, town and country. \I average 6.5 to 7 miles per litre, 30 to 33 a gallon, never more, what am I doing wrong.

Same problem happened to our jatco auto box 1450 plus vat with 2 year warranty at Gravesend automatic gearbox repairers. Happened in May, perfect since.

I take it you are turning on the ignition waiting a few seconds about 10 in summer and then starting the engine. This will let the glow plugs heat a bit before you try to start it

Thanks for the info, I will try and find a 10mm spacer. Thanks again.
