i'm afraid yes its the gearbox, had mine replaced with the k-series petrol one, and hey presto 4x4 was back, the guys above were right, the splines on the exit of the gearbox for the front wheels had gone. but sounds like you may need an ird too... sorry

just having a quick look on ebay etc at the cost of another gearbox, can anyone tell me if the k series petrol gearbox is the same as my 2.0l L series box ?

but if its the gearbox ? how comes i get drive to the rear wheels, surely the gearbox powers the IRD, then the IRD sends power to the front wheels and the rear propshaft ?

yeh tomorrow i'm gonna contact this guy, he says he's a landrover specialist with a garage, so i was quite suprised to find this again ! Guys, do you think its the gearbox or IRD ? just to double check, theres no electrics involved for front wheel drive ? i have noticed the hill start descent...

we had a 2nd hand IRD fitted only 2 months ago after the original went wrong (very noisy), £700 bill for that one !. Also during the winter season when we had snow, we found the rear wheels were spinning alot and traction control kicking in alot too. didnt feel like 4 wheel drive ?
