I'm not really a new member. I used to be on here years ago but have been inactive for a while - so I'd obviously been dumped as part of a database clean up and needed to sign in again.

So, I live near Sheffield, in a "posh" area, a village in a semi-rural location, which was once part of Derbyshire until the Sheffield sprawl got its mitts on it. The village has long been associated with wealthy people. It causes some people in Sheffield a problem, when you say you live here. They automatically raise a finger to their nose and infer you are a snob. I like that. I'm a working class lad, son of a coal miner. I grew up in a Derbyshire pit village in a 2 up 2 down terrace house, with no indoor toilets or bathroom or central heating...etc. So, I love it when people think I'm a snob for living in a nice area. I've always wanted to be in that position. It gives me a sense of achievement. So does driving a nice car.

I've had 3 Land Rover Discovery's to date. The old Td5, a Disco 3 2.7 V6 diesel and my current one, a Disco 4 3.0 V6 diesel. In the first instance, I rather hurriedly chose the Td5 as a company car whilst living and working abroad in Eastern Europe. The roads were terrible there, especially in winter - and I needed something that would go anywhere. I can't say I'd ever really fancied a Disco before - but I was so glad to have that old Td5. Felt safe in it and was a great car for the family - especially good because our two young kids could see out the windows and didn't get travel sick in it, like they did in ordinary cars, and they didn't fight as much because they weren't bored!

The Td5 was a bit "industrial" though - the Disco 3 was a different beast altogether, much more refined. And the Disco 4 that I currently run is the best of the lot. 120k trouble free miles so far.

I am considering trading up to a Range Rover - I will miss the Disco's utility though. But I'm not a fan of the new Discovery - I think the seats are very poor compared to my model, they've done away with "stadia seating" which was great for back seat passengers - and they can't even get the number plate centralised at the back. So, it's a no from me for that car.

I look forward to joining in the conversation on here once again.

Meanwhile...a little photo of our village green where all us snobs live, and where the first King of all England was crowned.
