Mines done the same. Are them eBay repair kits any good? I know they're only About £12 do won't lose anything but how easy are they to fit? The motor is fine and can hear same noises as the o.p described.

Head gasket was first thing that sprang to mind, common in the rover 25 aswell. And yes coolant not windscreen. A friend of the family (hgv mechanic) we've known for years will be gettin a Quick call this week I feel.
