Diff lock disaster - help please!

Not quite the disaster I thought it might have been. Brilliant advice. Thanks again.

Diff lock disaster - help please!

so...final question to confirm, if the flange is broken do I need new prop shaft or can I obtain just one (splined) flange end with uj?

Diff lock disaster - help please!

...when I say the UJ is broken what I actually mean is the flanged yoke on the transfer box side has sheared. Is this available as a separate part or do I need the complete prop shaft (irrespective of the balancing concern mentioned above)?

Diff lock disaster - help please!

Thanks. I slid the broken UJ off when I was winching the vehicle onto the trailer (it was flailing around), but didn't mark it for replacement so I'm not sure it will be balanced when I replace it. With this in mind would be better just to replace the prop shaft with a new item which will be...

Diff lock disaster - help please!

James, thanks for v prompt reply. I've had another look at it while still on the trailer. It DOES go while the diff lock selector is engaged, in either H or L, in forwards and reverse. (This is obviously on in RWD as the front driveshaft UJ has snapped). It does NOT go when the diff lock...

Diff lock disaster - help please!

Diff lock on my '95 300Tdi has been erratic for a long while and has frequently needed to be reversed to "unwind" it. However, today, the light flickered on while on the road (having just been off road in diff lock), and before I could find a safe spot to stop and reverse up, there was an...

Help. Want to buy a Defender/90

I ended up paying more than I wanted (c£7k) for a good 90 CSW, 1995, from a bloke in Preston I discovered on ebay (Janthelandyman). He has a high turnover of stock and while not the cheapest he has good feedback and my one is alright. (I've since bashed it up a bit but the independent lookover...

    Key locking nut

It doesn't seem seized up but I will give it a squirt. Are these things supposed to click/engage as you turn the key or do you have to do something else like turn the outside of lock as you turn the key?

    Key locking nut

I've just got around to trying to take the spare wheel off the boot of my Defender. Only problem is, there's a locking nut (with a key, not the socket type). The only likely looking key with the keys I got with the car just turns around in the lock with no effect. Is there a trick with...

    Defender with overdrive

Thanks. Will check those points when I get a moment. One last thing (I hope): when diff lock is engaged the light on the dashboard does not illuminate. Just a bulb or something more sinister?

    Defender with overdrive

If it were UJs wouldn't I get the knock on all changes, rather than just 4th and 5th?

    Defender with overdrive

Thanks for that. I will try the o/d change as you suggest later. Re the suspected wear in the transmission generally, is this sort of thing to be expected in a 12 year old 115k Defender and is it the sort of thing that is going to need imminent (expensive) surgery?

    Defender with overdrive

Thanks for those views. Well, I bought it, and have just driven it for 4 hours down the M6/M5, happily and effortlessly cruising at 80/85 in o/d top. It clicks in and out nicely in 4th and 5th with a slight jolt, no jolt at all if the clutch is used. Only thing is, at the end of the run when...

    Defender with overdrive

I've seen a 1995 Defender 300 TDi CSW on ebay which claims to have overdrive fitted - works with a little switch on top of the gear stick, and the seller claims it not only works on top gear as a genuine overdrive but also gives 20 gears in total. Anyone know what this is all about as I've...

Help. Want to buy a Defender/90

Thanks for those suggestions. I've tried Autotrader on a wider basis but still nothing seems to be looking so good as to warrant anything like a reasonable trip (Lancaster, Birmingham and Sussex from London in the last week is about as much as I can manage). Re Brightwells - does "Sold As...
