to change a rusty diff

I checked and yes the ZF8 gearbox is stronger than the ZF5 gearbox. This is due to the power output of the engine, and has nothing to do with the differential ratio. As my gearbox will still be connected to its current engine, this is a non-issue.

yes and your rr doesnt have the same gearbox as the one with the higher ratio, its stronger than yours for a reason

and of cause you didnt notice your rr has a diffrent gearbox to the one whos diffs you want to put in

your car is an auto it always starts in 1st, which will work out were my second is if you change the diffs, all of the ratios are available if looked up, and the reason i used to start in second(not any more) is because my first is lower than...

pulling away in first is very relevant even when not towing your 1st gear will fall roughly were my 2nd gear is according to your figers and starting in second gear is what destroys the centre bearing on my prop, oh and ive not changed any mountings

now you have looked at what happens in top gear have a look at what happens when you raise the ratio when in first and go from a standing start

people were telling you what may go wrong but you dismiss it as not relevant then quote figers which untill its done are but theoretical, i havent even mentioned the centre prop bearing, which i can tell you disintigrates with a manual box due to...

still putting more stress on it, which ever box it is

and the one thing you havent taken into account is the gear box, known to disintegrate on a whim, changing the diff will put more stress on it when pulling away

see i just went ahead and did it, and there were plenty saying it couldnt be done and noone saying how to do it

so do the swap then

but what are the 5th and 8th gear ratios

you should look at the gear ratios, in the 5 speed 4th is 1 to 1, in the 8 speed 7 is 1to1, the later box may have 8 gears but thats only to fil in the spaces between the 5 speed to make changing even smother, the manual 6th gear is a lower gear...

been there done that spent 3 days looking for it, found it 4 years later still stuck under a hose along with a 10mm socket i lost the year before

and that keeps making me feel tied

it was an x3 box, you would have to change both diffs as the transferbox is not a true diff
