I found the problem with mine it was a bad earth. Run a jump lead from the ecu earth to the battery earth and see if that sorts it. I cleaned all earth leads but had to run a separate earth lead from ecu to battery.

Did you get to the bottom of your problem I have a problem which sounds the same my defender will turn over but is buzzing from the relay and I have no engine management light or heater light on the dash board.
