When it comes to P38 transmissions it appears not.

Right. Now we're all back together and working. Swapped the atf in the tranny whilst it was on stands. But, on refilling the transfer box I have oil leaking into the transmission brake drum... f*** I put a new seal on the rear too.
-
So, today I have refit my transfer case (so much fun for a guy to have with a trolley jack on gravel). It's wonderful to have a day above zero degrees to work in!
And... it works. I've fixed a thing.
Next up is to change the gearbox fluid and filter and refill the transfer box. Fit new...

Unfortunately Raynauds is not age related. I've had it since my teens.
Otherwise I'm pretty fit!
-
Hey, me too. Dead man's fingers and toes down to the second knuckle. Such a painful thing.
-
Yes. This will be the second lift for me and my 52yo body. On axle stands... in the melted snow. Such fun keeping old motors alive!
-
Aha! It appears I neglected to pop the little sleeve (circled red) that goes onto the selector rod back on. Now fitted, box back together, it seems to work as it should.
Now... time to fight it back off the ground and refit.
I have adapted my trolley jack to assist...

My knees are working OK. The pain they give me when i use them as designed is another matter...
-
It must have slipped out of the tabs as I fought with it on my knees... in the snow...
-
Yup, just what I was thinking... bummer but hey ho.
-
Is this potentially the problem? Parts circled in blue...

I think it's pointing to me having put it together wrong. I'm thinking the forks may not be engaged in the gear that gets pulled properly. When first fit, I engaged low and heard it clunk into low but then it seems to move back and forward freely but doesn't pull the gears.
My thoughts are that...
-
Could I have put the transfer box together without the pinion that pulls the gears across properly engaged? So the rod turns but it isn't pulling the gears across?
-
OK, so the motor is turning. The shaft turns freely with the motor off. But it still won't clonk into high. ??

No burning smell. Off outside now to spend an hour underneath...
