Hello, thanks for looking

I have a 2002 td4 auto. The other day the autobox decided to throw a wobbler. When driving the gear change is very harsh and gives you a real kick up the arse!

The car is now parked and not being driven cos a new box is over £1500

Rang the main stealer and they were totaly disinterested and would'nt book it in til next week and would impart no knowledge. Bunch of c**ts, I won't name them but there in the centre of sheffield and the only main dealer.

Took it to an indie and they said £800 ish +vat, for new epc and 2 solendoids.

Did some research and this sounds like a fairly common fault on this jatco autobox which seems to have been fixed by replacing the solenoid(s) only. Which works out at a few hundred quid.

The actual fault readout is.
P1748 A/T 2-4 Brake duty solenoid open/short circuit to ground/battery

Fortunately my brother in law is an auto electrician (not specialist LandRover though) and is looking into this, but as some of you reading might already have encountered this fault please lay your wisdom on me.

I will pay for the repair, but call me a tight arsed Yorkshireman, I'd like to do it meself cheaper if possible:D

Cheers

Just an update on this if anybody's interested.
After mucho searching the solenoid body is £493 +vat and if you get this error code it needs replacing.
After you add in gearbox oil sealants and finding somewhere to keep the car level whilst your under it, its easier to get a pro to do it for you.
Managed to get a deal for £800 cash with the local specialist.
As a last note, the main dealer never did get back in touch to help even though we are known customers. This is the third time they have let us down and been totally useless. So as the saying goes, three and out. Next time I want a new Landrover I'll go to an independant:D

Seems a good deal to me considering the cost of parts and you'll also have some comeback with a specialist should it be necessary.

Yes I was really happy with the deal and the level of service. Have driven it a couple of times and all seems ok. So heres a plug for them if any body needs help from a decent bunch of chaps.

UPDATE 2014

So rather than starting a new thread thought I would resurrect this one as it gets a lot of hits off the search engine.
Four years and over 40,000 miles on and the jacto box is still behaving itself ( touch wood, pray to any deity listening, cross fingers).
But the question is. Theses boxes aren't the most reliable out there. Neither are they the smoothest. Has anybody tried or heard of a different box that could be put in instead. I'm guessing not or we'd have a thread on it. But interested in your comments.
Mike :p

Thanks for the update....so much better updating an old thread then starting a new one...:) I think these boxs are really smooth......but now that im in mondo mode....I can feel some jerks and roughness in the changes that were not there in 4x4 mode.....

There seems to be common problems with the Jatco but having said that there's always going to be a weakness in anything. Volume of faults isn't high. We talk about them a lot on ere but peeps posting faults with them are few compared to how many there are on the road.

Very true
But it does seem to be the solenoid body that gives up the ghost at around 80k. This makes me wonder that once replaced are the newer parts better?
Mine was a reconditioned part, re-built by an independent specialist to a higher standard. Doesn't mean it will last any longer though.
Would be interesting to hear if anyone who had the parts replaced at 80k have reached over 160k and how they feel their hippo is performing. Or should we all start saving up again for another solenoid body:rolleyes:

Depends what reconditioned means. If you recondition something that generally means it's had the fault it had, fixed. but it depends on how far the recondition goes. It may be a broken part/failed part repaired or fixed. Some will do a full recondition where they take it apart and inspect everything, and change/fix as required. Hence reconditioning everything as opposed to the faulty parts. Doing the whole lot is the betterer option, but it's still a used auto which has had some of it's life taken from it. Hence you wouldn't eggspect it to last as long as a new one would.
