LR 110 300TDI - ExEmbassy Car (with Pics) - Need advice and price check

Hi - doesn't sound bad - corrosion shouldn't be a problem where you are! I've got a pdf of things to look for when buying a Discovery 300 tdi - same engine and might give you things to look for - send me a PM with your email and I'll email it to you. I have an ex-RAF 110 3.5 V8 and it was...

How to run 24-volt DC in LR?

Medical seems to suggest high reliability and probably a very good 24V supply. You need to consider how critical it is, how long (and whether) you can operate if it fails, whether the equipment has internal batteries (and how long they will last), and what happens if it fails. You then need to...

    Drop arm ball joint

I've got the drop arm ball joint tool but the seat was so worn that there wasn't anything to pull on and absolutely nothing that I could get a drift on. I also had a weep on the steering box so I decided to remove the whole box and then take the drop arm off (with the intention of servicing the...

    defender insurance

Wrote a long reply and website logged me out :( In summary - we have 3 cars with NFU, missus is reg keeper for Landy but I use it for business (self employed) most insurance will only give SDP and not business for a named driver. Price went up last year - phoned them and talked it through and...

    3.5 V8 efficiency

My ex-RAF 110 3.5 V8 averages about 18mpg with a variety of traffic conditions, in fact it hardly varies in day-to-day use. I have got about 22 on a long run, but I usually drive at about 55 so that helps. Being ex-MoD it had restrictors in the inlet manifold, but whether that would make it...

    Springs 110 Ex military Defender

The heavy duty (or 130 standard) springs are: NRC9448-Driver, NRC9449-Passenger. Not sure which will be on the MoD, but I would suspect they are probably the heavy duty - the MoD parts list just refers to the suspension 'as basic' which just means the MoD version doesn't have specific MoD...

    cheap door seals

All Land Rovers leak - but they let it out again with supreme efficiency!

Err what's this and why is it leaking, help

I'd certainly go for sealing tricks first and leave doing the box seals till the summer! Removing the drop arm is a bar steward and I ended up paying the garage a tenner to get it off, after trying pullers, heat, violence, etc. Having got it off I couldn't get the ball joint top cone out as...

How many miles on original gearbox

Mine's a LT85 in a military 110 3.5 V8 and it's done about 280,000km - 175k miles. It's had reasonable oil changes, but it's a bugger to get to the gearbox oil filler so I must confess I haven't been religious about it. Just had the heads off and certainly couldn't complain - bit of coke on...

    Viscous fan

If you don't have a fan it will overheat if you're in standing traffic - how soon depends on how warm the day is. You really do need a fan - whether it be viscous or electronic like a Kenlow or equivalent, unless you live in Greenland.

    Handbrake Adjustment (200Tdi)

Worth checking the state of the cable - mine was down to a few strands and the adjuster at the handbrake lever end was rusted up solid. Definitely recommend taking out panel under middle seat to get to top end of cable, if you need to adjust that end, although you might find that adjusting the...

    Wanted seat belts

Hi - finally remembered to go and look for the belts! I was wrong about them being 3 point - they're actually Securon rear lap belts part number 210. There's a picture (no 10) at Seat Belt & Seat Belts Pictures of products and the link takes you to the dimensions, etc. I've got an exciting...

    Wanted seat belts

Sorry - combination of a certified crap memory and a need to resurrect the fence before the next puff of wind meant that I forgot to look - I've put a reminder in Outlook so hopefully I'll remember in the morning! Bob

    Wanted seat belts

I've got a pair of seatbelts in the garage that I was going to put in the back of my 110, but decided that they weren't going to be much use on side benches (and they're not needed for MOT) so I've never fitted them. I seem to remember they're 3 point inertia reel, but I'll have a look in...

    Wheeler Dealers

"I bought a dodgy car from Wheeler Dealers" - you can just see Rupert Murdoch preparing the headlines - I don't think they can afford to do a dodgy motor. It's basically the only regular programme showing actual techniques and let's face it, 60 minutes of bleeding brakes hardly makes good...

3.5 v8 on carbs keeps cutting out

Had the same problem with mine after I changed all the electrics - only cured it by putting the original rotor arm back in. Have tried 2 more (including a genuine LR one) and the only one that works is the original one - now done over 100k since i've had it so I'm definitely on borrowed time...

    A frame ball joint

I had a clonk on take up on my 110 and it turned out to be the bushes on the bottom links on the rear suspension. I got a pair of second hand ones, changed the bushes, and then swapped them over. If you do change them do them at the same time - I did one and then the other one the next day -...

    New.

If it doesn't you need a bigger hammer! It should fit, but check what state the donor engine is in - the £700 might be an investment if the donor is not too good.

    Lifting a 90 with straps?

Picture of my dad's A40 being loaded onto the St Ola ferry to Orkney c. 1962. They had hooks that went round the wheels and swung it over more efficiently than any Met Police tow away lifter! I'd check if they're used to doing it and if they are ask how they normally do it. My Landy was in...
