Hi all,

I put my td5 into my garage as I was getting excessive smoke from the exhaust. My mechanic discovered I had a dropped piston and suspected one or more injectors had failed. He sent the set of 5 to be tested, where it was found that 4 of the 5 had failed and the 5th on its way out. The test centre told my mechanic they have only seen this type of failure in remapped td5 and overheating engines. My TD5 had been piggybacked by a previous owner.

I now have the unenviousness task of needing 5 injectors!!!

Has anyone else heard of this and can anyone point me in the direction of a used set of 5 injectors???:)

What colour was the smoke? Did you drive into the garage or were you towed? Have they had the head off to diagnose a dropped piston, or are they guessing? Have they used a compression tester?

You don't give details about the age or mileage of your engine, which could be some help on here.

It is usually possible to have your existing injectors fully reconned by a reputable agent.

Don't know where you are, but you could always give a company called Auto Diesel in Newcastle a quick bell for advice.

Hi there,

My 110 is a 2001 on 100k.

The smoke was dark grey and murderous on the lungs and eyes!! I did drive to the garage, felt very under-powered. My garage had the head off and diagnosed the dropped piston. The diesel testing centre tested for compression, spray pattern etc

I'm looking for a set of second hand injectors or reasonable priced refurbished, the model number of msc000040, this is for the 98-01 td5. Will other td5 injectors fit this???

Thanks for looking. I found these on ebay myself, the breakers told me they are compatible, but my local landy garage said their not. So, I'm a bit stuck as to what to do

You need to look at your old injectors and see what colour the plastic ring around the top of the injector is.

From memory you can only fit BLACK top injectors to a 10p EU2 spec engine which are the early ones which operate at 2200 bar. Mainly pre 2001 but there are some exceptions.

BLUE and GREEN injectors are interchangeable but can only be fitted to later EU3 spec
15p and later engines as they operate at higher pressures of 3000 bar via a different cam profile.

Hi all,

....... The test centre told my mechanic they have only seen this type of failure in remapped td5 and overheating engines.....
I strongly doubt that a remap would damge the injectors as the fuelling variables controlled and allowed by the ECU are within a fixed range.

An overheating engine will show itself in other ways long before any damage to the injectors would occur. Not least of which would be coolant loss from hoses or header tank or head gasket failure. Its true TD5s dont like running hot but they need to be damm hot before it becomes a problem.

I'd look at replacing the injector loom in the first instance as its relatively cheap and may solve the problem. I've had several remapped TD5s (granted not piggy back units) and driven more miles than I care to remember and never had a problem.

Hi all,

Managed to track down a set of 5 used injectors for £350, with that price I'm getting my injectors coded and a diagnostic ran to check the ecu is set at standard.
Interesting to see the results!
