Hi All,

  1. this is re another thread I opened a while ago as my FL isn't moving anymore. After a poor choice of garage I ended up with Land Rover and they told me there was no fault code and the box might have died due to overfilling the gearbox by 3l. Actually that has been done a main dealer from Land Rover in Germany.
I thought the box can keep about 7.5-8l of gearbox oil and the renewal part would be 3.5l Is that correct, cause that would mean there should have been 11l in. When I told the guy in Germany he said that if that would have been the case then it would have been blown the oil-seal rings which makes sense to me to be honest.
Anyone any idea on that? To me it sounds a bit like a fairy-tale.

Kind Regards
Matthias

From dry the Jatco in the Freelander 1 uses 8.5L according to the rave disk.
The partial change requires about 3.5L if the level is set correctly.
There's a special way to check the level with the engine running.
If you have over filled by +3L then you can blow seals or at least put pressure on them. Not sure if this is enough to destroy seals.
You may also see oil coming out of the breather on top of the auto if over filled by that amount.
Make sure you undo the correct bolt or you will lose reverse gear or worse.

That's exactly what my old LR dealer in Germany said what would have happened if overfilled. I don't think I overfilled the gearbox. What happened was that when I had trouble with the Jatco solenoids around 2.5y ago I refilled it using the method described in the rave. As the fault still existed due to the cable issue it went to LR as I didn't have time anymore. I told them to make sure about the oil was ok as well. They drained the oil, cleaned and refilled it once done with the job. That must have been 12k miles ago or more. Last time I saw the gearbox was completely clean. No oil spill or any thing I could see that's why I think it sounds odd with too much oil in it. LR used the oil in the gearbox as it was new and just refilled it.I just to him this and he talked to a gearbox specialist getting the same response that likely with three litres it would have blown the sealings and probably spilled out.

It's seems quite common for the box to be overfilled. I've got nearly 5 litres out in a partial change many times, including my own V6. There seems to be a standard partial change volume put in. I don't believe the box volume has to be millilitre perfect but it should be close to the correct amount in there.
