OP, did you have any luck with this?

I have the same issue (stuck oil filter). I've tried shifting it with oil filter pliers. I can get a reasonable grip but not much leverage. I also tried one of those 3 gripper socket wrench things as suggested in an earlier post from Halfords - again I can't get it to shift.

I'm considering putting a large screwdriver through it to try and get some leverage but as the filter is still intact and undamaged at this stage, is there anything else I can try before I damage it? I would imagine the job is only going to get harder with oil dripping all over the place!

Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

its only thin the metal around a filter and if its that tight it will most likely tear up try chiselling it round with a screw driver or similar

Nightmare - I still can't get it out - even with a screwdriver through it. I'm going to have to give up on it for a few days as I've hurt my ribs which limits my ability to move around under the landy.

As the light was failing, I noticed you can see the oil filter through the top of the engine compartment. I was thinking I might be able to get a screwdriver through it from above and get some leverage with a pipe. Has anyone tried something similar?

putting aside the **** in the thread have you read it ,pushing screw driver through isnt the best way

It's ex mod, so it's probably a right of passage where he can undo it is king or some **** :) I even bent my screwdriver.

I read about chiselling it but I can’t seem to get the right angles for that with the propshaft. I’m also a bit worried about damaging the face of what it connects to. I thought with enough leverage I would be able to ‘crack it off’ with a screwdriver.

you wont damage filter head filter sticks out a good bit from it ,unless your an animal with it :)

Get a length of webbing, double it flat then wrap it round the filter. Stick a bar through the loop and turn.

This works as you are forcing the strop to tighten against itself!

You can move it a fraction of an inch round at any time!

Good old 'up the blue, get you home Landy engineering'!!

worst case you might be better off to remove the filter housing so you can do it on the bench

You could of removed the engine, changed the filter and have it running again in the time this thread has been running  :D

Oldseadogs suggestion re webbing sounds like it's worth a go.

What's involved in removing the filter housing?

Tell me about it - doing my best inbetween rain (working outside) in the freezing cold, it's been a lot of fun! To be fair alhtough I spent most of yesterday doing this, I've only had a couple of hours at it today. I had arranged for my muscle bound nephew to come over and give me a hand but he failed to show. Probably paying to pump iron at the Gym instead of exercising for free on my oil filter.

no-one mentioned a chain wrench - they dig in and dont slip. yu can also get an extension bar to drop the handle below the body to get an long bar on it...

Thats what I use. The steering guard gets in the way for most methods, I can't get in from above and when I put a new one on I don't try to tighten it too much, it's only going up to a rubber seal after all.
