ok, driving along yesterday, no funny noises, thinking that the landy was going well. Changed from 2nd to 3rd and there was no drive at all. Pulled over, checked all the levers and no drive in any gear, low or high, 4WD or normal, free wheeling hubs in or out.
There was no bang or noise when this happened, just didn't work any more.
There is now a slight whirring noise when I put it in gear and try to drive.

I'm a little puzzled I have to say.

I started checking the diff, the back one is fine as drive is coming through to the prop shaft (which is also fine).

The overdrive seems ok I think, I took the inspection cover off the top and the gears move in time with the rear wheels.

The lever on the tx box is still connected and moves ok

Can't think how to check the main box and the tx box.

I have started taking the gearbox off so I can see the clutch (it's that area that the slight whirring noise is coming from). I wonder if the plate has somehow collapsed and is stopping it from engaging at all.

Any ideas how to check things or where to start would be very much appreciated.

you can remove rear tin plate on transfer box and see if main shaft is turning, if it wont drive in 4wd then its got to be box or clutch unless theres an issue with both axles ,clutch centers can rip (spline boss shaft goes through)out ,they often look fine till you look closely, you ned to check g/box and over drive
 
the clutch centre is my guess as well, hopefully find out tonight. I hate taking gearboxes off. If it would move i'd prob take it to the landy garage but since it's stuck on my drive I have to get the spanners out. I guess if it isn't the clutch then at least I have the gearbox almost off anyway

it sounds like the clutch sleeve has given up the ghost (splines knackered)

there will be no need to remove the gearbox

remove your overdrive and then take the clutch sleeve out, pound to a penny you've no splines on it

to get you moving again just refit a standard gear and cover plate rather than the overdrive

this can all be done through the seat box centre cover panel and from under the vehicle

if i'm wrong you'll not have lost any time but it's an easy check

unfortunately the clutch sleeve looks pretty well perfect and the overdrive has drive through it from the inside to the outside gear so that seems ok.
I guess that leaves the clutch, the gearbox or the transfer box. My money is on the clutch but who knows ;-0

happened to me
felt as i had a normal clutch but no drive
the clutch center had gone i changed the clutch and all bits plate/pressure/bearings
and runs great now
first thing i checked was the main shaft was working also drained all oils to check for metal bits ?
 
Good point, changing all the oils is probably a good idea, makes it lighter as well and since I'm moving I can save hauling gallons of gearbox oil with me, hell, maybe I'll do the axles as well ;-)
Borrowing an engine hoist today to try moving the gearbox back. Will go into gear no probs with engine running so it's probably as you say the clutch.
 
ok, clutch is out and it is broken but not as much as I thought it would be. there are little springs toward the middle of the friction plate and they have metal parts that seem to go between them. On of the metal bits is broken in two and the bits are free to roam around by one end and several of the springs are broken.
I guess one end of one of the metal bits moved when I depressed the clutch and jammed between the friction and the thrust plate stopping the clutch closing.
Anyway I'll go get a new friction plate tomorrow and try it.
I also turned the gearbox input shaft and felt the output shaft moving ok so I guess the gearbox is alright.
I guess I need to check the transfer box yet

transfer box ok, turned the handbrake drum and I can feel big gear at the end of the TX box going round (overdrive off so I can put my hand in)
time to buy clutch bits
 
happy landrover, all fixed. Good job I checked the oil levels while I was at it, rear diff was pretty much empty
