It will be obvious if its running, you get smoke and a roaring sound, bite the bullet and change the sensor, they are notorious for failing. Same sensor as Rover 75 and they suffer similar problems with the fbh.
are you sure the heater module is fitted ?

At that price I don't think it will be a propper elm scan 327. There's too maney copies out there that are crap. Most do something, but they're a cheap copy of the 327 chip....Will this help me diagnose the fault?

both really ,your engine should blow heat out after 5-10 mins fbh should kick about 2-1 deg c . . . .but worth checking no air lock in the matrix or the matrix could be blocked or no heat getting to it , need to investigate this a bit furtherSo is the problem likely to be the FBH or the thermostat?
