I have noticed my 2001 P38 diesel makes a clunk upon starting. There is never any noise any other time.

I'm fairly sure it's the exhaust hitting something when engine starts and moves the most.

I've had a brief look under when I greased the prop shafts and there is a point near the front where the exhaust comes from the engine and is so close to a beam that runs under the car, this must be where its hitting.

But I didnt notice and rubbers missing. I'm going for a better look soon, but just wondered if anyone had any ideas.

Cheers. Simon

Hi.

With a good lever see if there is too much movement in the mount as when when the engine is stationary they look fine. A few years (bugger, not as few as i thought !!) ago i had a lightweight with a v6 and i thought something major had failed but it turned out to be the ex'st manifold on the bulkhead:). It can sound quite alarming.
Cheers, Nick.

Engine mounts? Is that what you think may be worn out?

This had crossed my mind, I will have a good look over the weekend.

Cheers.

The exhaust comes from the turbo, then goes over the crossmember. Its hitting the crossmember.

There is a gap of about 5mm between crossmember and the exhaust above it!

Dont think its the engine mounts, but its too wet for to get under and have a proper look.

try jamming a bit of wood in there, then start it, if the noise goes then it was that. take out the wood!!!!

When the weather is good you might....might be able to undo the exhaust and adjust it. Sometimes pattern parts are the culprit.

righ, tback to ebay.

Yea I thought about jamming something in there, I will have a better look when its dry.

It may even bend up slightly, it may have just come down over time, just slightly enough to bang.
