One of my rear shocks is corroded and one of my fronts had a slight leak. MOT is coming up, so I need to replace them. It's a 90 200tdi which I use mainly on the road. It gets a little off road on our own fields when it is needed. We also have a terrible track which gives the suspension a pounding every time I go out.

Question is what shocks to I go for? There are some Armstrong ones on Paddocks for about a tenner a corner plus VAT. The local place has suggested some de Carbon gas ones at closer to £40 a corner.

Questions:

- any experience of the Armstrongs?
- will gas ones make much difference on the road?
- and recommendations for a tightish budget?
- whilst I'm in there, what else should I replace?

Luckily I know exactly what to do thanks to Treworgey.

The Armstrongs are fine. I had them on mine before I fitted the lift.
If you've got plenty of money, get Terra Firma or Old Man Emu.

Don't forget to get new turret rings and nuts - you WILL need them (about a fiver each).

my old man emu kit is un surpassed.I beat the crap outta it and over load it and it still dont bounce.....
The shocks must be the best ive ever had,so nicely damped.

i use de carbon,i think thi woth the extra.stay clear of pro-comp t soft and thi dont stand n hammer.but this is only my opinion!

terrafirma have just released a 5" shock and they also have remote reservoir units to prevent heat built up. fully adjustable too.

Tre, i find my std TF's a little bouncy when unloaded. just me?

rarely run unloaded so can't say I've noticed.

I've recently put pro-comps on the rear of my classic along with heavy duty on road towing springs which are solid, you can jump on the towbar with practicly no movement so i can't see much chance for mine off road.

armstrong shocks are what LR fit as standard. If its good enough for LR... I have them all round on mine, mine gets loaded up to the roof, driven along uneven stuff, they seem to do fine.

Yep. I have gone the Armstrong route. Shocks all round, two turret rings and splashed out on poly mounts. Total bill £57.84* inc VAT and delivery. That's what I love about land rovers.:D

(*compare that to a new set of spark plugs I had to buy for a Mazda RX-8 last year - £177 from stealer):(

monroe gas shocks are cheap enough

had a set of them they were shyte! lasted little more than 12 months so got a set of the old man emu fookin spot on! had them on me old 87 90 still on there now 5 years later (used to drive a really rough lane most days about a mile each way at speed mostly to)
when the new 90 is ready for some thats what will goon there ;)
