Gents, those in the know,
I read a very interesting post a week or two ago but cant find it now about the earlier oil burners DI etc. Someone said they were from the ldv type van. Also that there were two versions, i wondered if anyone could elaborate and which one would be the better to go for, cant afford a TD4 but would like to keep the freelander preservation society going.
jim

ps not worked out how to put a sig on yet

I think there was only one early diesel, i've got one. Good solid motor as found in the rover 200 400 600 25 45 two litre lump with fly by wire throttle and some other electrickery but seems to be reliable if a bit slow. Its a modern version of the one in Montegoes and Maestros.

I'm thinking of selling if you are interested 2000 3 door 155K miles.

Some of the very early freelanders were non turbod, that could be where you got the 2 engines from, as far as i know all the l series were the same after that apart from different fuel pumps..switched between lucas and bosch..
Hope this helps

Wasn't the L-series called the "Perkins Prima" when it was put in the vans? Got a feeling it was used in the LDV Sherpa van? Not sure TBH.

Cheers

Dead right Blippie, twas originally a Perkins lump, copied under licence by Rover. Been in almost as many vehicles as the Ford Pinto lump.....

Been waiting for someone else to resoond to this, surely all Freelander Diesels are turboed?

I've never seen a non turbo Hippo but the l series as a 'prima' was available in maestros non turboed.

Ok anoraks on Train spotters!

The L-series was designed in 1992, developed by 'corporate diesel engineering team' from LR and Rover. British in every sense!

It entered production in 1994, costing £30m to bring it to the production stage. It was first used in the Rover 600 shortly after that.

There were 241 completely new changes to the L-series:

To name but a few:

Cast Iron Block with siamese bores

LM25 Alum head, 2 vertical valves per cylinder

Hydraulic tappets, single overhead cam, belt driven.

Garrett GT15 turbo, variable waste control and intercooler

Then came the Hippo in Jan 1998, the L-series had some 40 modifications for the Hippo, relocated turbo and different inlet manifold

Power Output of the L-series:

Freelander..........94bhp @ 4.2k rpm, 154 lb ft torque @ 2k rpm

Rover 620.......... 103.6bhp @ 4.2k rpm, 155lb ft torque @ 2k rpm

Rover 220D/220 SD...84.9bhp @4.2k rpm, no torque figures available
