Sheared bracket on transmission to rear axle??!? Help!

Hi All,
This is my first post to the land rover forums. I'm a Uni Student with a 1995 Discovery 300Tdi, and for a few days I've been getting a strange rumble.

I looked under the landie today, and on what I assume to be the rear transmision, there was a connector that had some nastly looking shears in it, and generally didn't look too healthy. As the noise is getting worse, I can only assume it is falling apart!

Can anyone help with what this is, whether I can buy and fit it myself, or where a good garage in the Portsmouth area to get it done quickly and cheaply is?

Is that meant to be the rear prop shaft (the bit that connects the transfer gearbox to the rear axle) ??? If so, it looks to me like somebody has cobbled together some old scrap metal instead of getting a new part. It looks nothing at all like mine but I have a 200tdi. I think the 300 should have a rubbery connector onto the back axle whereas mine has a metal one (UJ) the same as the gearbox end.

A picture showing more of the underside would be helpful I think.

Cheers for your reply. I don't like the sound of this cobbled together malarkey. A lot of what you can see in that picture is the rubbery connector, which is split in places, but there is also some definite metal shearing.

It does fit your description of rear prop shaft (I know very little about cars, boats are more my thing!)

Don't ffs drive that anywhere else.

If that gives up on you you'll be in for a world of pain and expense.

Propshaft rubber coupling

Just seen your most recent pictures..

If that What's left of the rubber coupling snaps whilst your driving it round the prop shaft will continue to spin round underneath the vehicle which will result in

A, Lots of damage!

B, Brown trousers!

It's shouldn't be a difficult job to replace (why don't i belive myself it's a landrover theres no such thing as an easy job!)

The link i posted up should be the right part for the job.

Someone on here will probably tell you if i'm wrong!

Thanks so much for your reply - I'd already reached the conclusion I wasn't driving the thing anywhere else!

I'll see if there's a landy garage in portsmouth that has the part I need, otherwise visiting me mum is off the cards for a few days while I wait for mail order!

I would suggest new bolts while your at it

Yep I'd say that was broken. You might have to take the whole prop shaft off to replace that rubbery bit so go and make sure you can loosen the bolts both ends otherwise you might need to buy one of these:

Also if you get emule (one of those file sharing things the music industry doesn't like) you should be able to download a 300tdi workshop manual in PDF which might come in handy.

you need a new prop donut, as the others say, fit new bolts while yer at it, any landy spares place will have one

dont drive until its fixed mate.
as been said, fix new bolts too. the rubber donut on the disco was/is a design disaster. tried before on other cars, and guess what? it was a disaster then too.

Got a new rubber bit from Wessex Land Rover in Portsmouth, kit comes with three bolts (i need 6). Don't have a choice about changing them - the old ones are sheared/rounded/clucking ducked.

Garage has the car on Wednesday to give me an "estimate of costs" then are doing the work on thursday, subject to them not trying to convince me it's going to take 4 people 7 days, £9000, ready in about 2 hours guv...

should only take an hour, max.

Its not a huge job, if you get the new donut and bolts its just the case of putting it back together with the new parts.

If you need to drive it, you could take the back prop off until its fixed, just means your 2WD.

What is all the thread looking stuff?

All the thread looking stuff has come out of the rubber bushing - I'm guess it's there to bind it together in normal use?

If I had an angle grinder handy, and a torque wrench, I'd do it all myself, but I don't, and the garage respond well to the words "cash".

Well, the garage has had a look at it. Turns out that I need another 3 bolts, and a new propshaft (the bit that bolts on to the donut is damaged) and a new flange going into the rear diff (again, that is damaged too).

A nice chap called John wil be coming down from Bordon at some stage with the bits I need (hopefully) so I can look suitably aghast as the costs mounts up and up!

i was gonna warn you about that, but i didnt want to spoil your day.

Hmmm

Well, landie has now been done. £380 for all parts and labour, including collecting and delivering the car to and from portsmouth, tightening the rear wheel bearings, replacing the oil, and supplying and fitting a new side mirror, that sounds pretty good to m!

Looking forward to getting her back tonight - my mates K Reg Rover Convertible doesn't really compare!
