Hi all,

My 300TDi auto has been a real pain to start over the past few weeks, seemed not to be firing on all 4 and ran rough for a little while. Once warm it seemd fine (although a little down on power).

Tried to start it tonight, and it would only fire on 2 or 3 pots, and when it did start, giving it any revs just smoked out the neighbourhood with unburnt diesel!

The glow plugs were changed around 1500 miles ago along with the fuel, oil and air filters and engine oil.

The 'engine check' warning light also came on for a couple of seconds tonight when I was giving it a little gas.

Any help would be gratefully received as I really do need to get it sorted ASAP.

Cheers.

as its an auto, I am right in thinking you have the electronic throttle control and MAF sensor??

To be honest I'm not sure but I believe so.

I've since asked the original question elsewhere and it has been suggested that the symptoms point to a head gasket failure.

I also had an issue some weeks ago where the temp gauge would indicate the water was up to temp, but the heater was cold! Eventually it would warm (just). I later had an issue when I was travelling at around 55MPH when the needle shot up into the red and I lost a lot of power. I pulled over, let the engine cool and re-filled the lost fluid. (around 1 litre). The engine started OK afterwards, and the temp seemed to be rock solid at around 1/3. Also, the heater has worked fine ever since. So from this, I assumed that there had been some sort of blockage and the pressure of the water overheating had cleared it?

Whether this is related to the current problem or not I do not know.

It does sound as though you may have a failing injector or even a faulty glow plug which if they are a 'pattern part' is not unusual. I would be tempted to test them anyway and also your injectors before going down the HG route.

Thanks for that, how would I check the injectors?
