300tdi towing

hello everyone,sounds a stupid question,but can anyone tell me the legal towing capacity for a 95 standard 300tdi disco please?my mate has had a bet with me saying its 3500kg.but ive allways thought it was 2700kg.any body help as theres a curry ridding on this.cheers me dears

i always thought the UK legal limit is 100% of the vehicle weight, just had a look that is only a recommendation

you can tow up to 4000kg on a pin and eye and 3500kg on a ball. Not to sure where the leagal bit comes in though.

yes 3500kgs but depends what u towing that is the legal side trailer would be okay biut have to be braked as well

hello there james,3500kg is the legal limit to tow with a 4x4 on a public road,anything over that then its got to go on a flatbed lorry.anyway is the disco in question plated to tow 3500kg???????hurry up iam bloody starving............

I'm sure some one else will be along shortly to tell you your sprouting a load of crap but I thought I'd start the ball rolling.

You can tow upto 3500 gross (thats trailer and load) on a normal braked trailer. and if your towing over that weight then the trailer has to have close coupled brakes (usually airbrakes) I believe the max towing capacity is 4 tonnes on a disco. However there are other vehicles tractors, & unimogs spring to mind that can tow much more than 4tonnes so it's quite possible to tow a trailer with a lot more than 3.5 tonnes gross weight.

and I've seen a police RR pull an Artic off a motorway before today and thats about 32tonnes

it would be towing ifor williams plant trailer(705kg unladen braked)
mini digger(2600 kg inc diesel/lube)
3 buckets(186kg)
total tow=3491kg
would the disco be ok with the tow/legal

Yep it would be fine. Just don't fill the diesel tank on the mini digger or buy 20gall of red and put it in the trailer.

I've collected the same type of rig from hire centres a few times with both a 110 and a 300tdi disco. and never had any problems or been challenged by the hire centres and they are paranoid about letting you take their trailers/plant on an illegal rig as it voids the insurance if they do.

you say you are towing a mini digger? I assume this is not because you like to build large sand castles on your holidays but use it for work. If this is the case then any vehicles with a total train weight of 3500kkg or over require a Tachograph to be fitted to the tow vehicle and you to obey the lawas that acompany this.

So as the landy is just over 2000kg by the time you fill up with fuel, pop a couple of tools in the back, add the driver and number of pasengers then attach the trailer without the digger you find yourself very close the 3500kg limit. Add the digger and you are over and require a Tacho.

Oh why oh why do people jump in and utter total bollocks without checking their facts 1st. Go and do a search on "do I need a tachograph." I'll make it even easier than that. Do the search on VOSA or the government websites. then come back and apologise for uttering complete twaddle whilst claiming it's the truth.

Oh and just to make your life a little easier the stated Kerb weight of a disco includes the driver and a full tank of fuel.

now now lads,i thought you only needed a tacho if your doing more than 28 miles one way or have i got that wrong???

Nope your right on the nail. oh and if your vehicle isn't been used for hire or reward then you don't need a tacho at all. This flow chart might help clarify the situation a little.

So the first box on your diagram says 'is it for the comercial carage of goods' the answer would be yes because you are carying the digger for comercial/business purposes.

In the car is "The Plate"

A Disco Plate should show 4 figures for weights

Top line - Maximum VEHICLE weight fully laden but no trailer

Second line maximum gross weight with trailer - like sitting on a weighbridge.

Third line 1- the maximum weight on the front axle (axle #1)
Fourth line 2- the maximum weight on the rear axle (axle#2)

In myTD5 disco the maximum all up gross weight is 6,380 kilos.
As the car weighs about 2½ tonnes, a 3½ tonne trailer keeps it well under the maximum gross.

I can and do tow a near 1 tonne trailer with a whole Disco on it. That makes around six tons on the road.

No it isn't you numpty because the rule applies to the vehicle and not the trailer. And there is a local occupancy exemption which excludes anyone operating with 28 miles of the vehicles registered address. So unless he's travelling all over the country with a mini digger then he would also be exempt under that clause.
