How do you determine a TD5 engine is suffering excessive crankcase pressure?
After a long journey on a hot day, windows open and front flaps open I could smell burning oil when stationary and engine running.
The smell was not to extreme but nevertheless I could smell it where normally I did not.
On investigation I found at the back of the rocker box at the gasket joint, corresponding to the half moon shaped detail some vaporised oil was escaping.
Looking around the area no excessive amounts of oil deposits on the cylinder head or on the gearbox bell housing suggesting to me if there is something wrong it has only just happened.
With the engine running I removed the oil filler cap, yes I could see a small amount of oil vapour coming out of the filler hole but how do I determine if what I see is excessive and needs remedial work?
I do understand that some vapour will be present and normally the closed system within the engine will deal with it by re-introducing the vapour into the induction system to be burned in the engine.
1. Why is vapour escaping from the rocker box gasket?
2. How do you determine a TD5 engine is suffering excessive crankcase pressure?
3. Is it the rocker box gasket failure, replace and all is OK?
4. Can the depression control valve have any influence?

Your advice will be much appreciated.

Suspect your Depression Control Valve has failed, it's the bit on top of the turbo inlet hose that looks like a black plastic mushroom - replace it.

Part no is LLN100140L

Benneboy thank you I have ordered one from main stealer along with a new rocker gasket.
Are Depression Control Valve's a common issue on TD5's?
What is the expected life of a Depression Control Valve?
I have recorded 71768 miles all service at a main stealer it has never been changed should it have?

should I be looking at anything else whilst the rocker cover is off?
Say injector seals or harness I know not related to the problem but whilst the cover is off should I set time to do them no record of them being changed in the service history.

I'd leave the alone unless you have other symptoms, very easy to crack injector seats if injectors not pulled straight out. Only thing I would suggest is to replace the top hat rocker cover seals to get a good tight fit, its those failing that causes the rocker gasket to leak.

Bennehboy spot on I have replaced the depression control valve and the rocker box seal, taken it on a good run no vapour great. :D:D:D THANK YOU
