Im Chris, new to forum, and not yet a Landrover owner. I think i want a 200tdi with a galvanised chassis. I have seen a few on ebay around the 4K mark. Im more interested in condition rather than age.

Any advice welcome.

Welcome. The buyers guide "politely" suggested above is a good starting point.

5 years ago I was in the same boat as you. Knew very little about Defenders but wanted to make sure I did'nt waste my money.

My best advice would be get looking at LOADS. If I had bought the first one or two I looked at (which I excitedly wanted to do) I would have been so mugged off!

Chassis/Bulkhead or the main issues I thing many agree.

You get what you pay for basically, or in the case of some lucky bugger on here you can sometimes get a cracking deal like a 110 for 500 quid . As Daz suggested take something with you to have a good poke and tap around the whole chassis, especially known trouble spots i.e outriggers, rear crossmember etc.... A small toffee hammer or such like is ideal.

Dont do what i did and jump straight in only to find that it needs a good bit of work done to it

Its not just about chassis and bulkhead, you have to look and see what else has been done/upgraded, how much slack is in the drivetrain, common faults like wipers and door locks e.t.c.

I currently have mine up for sale, its not a galv chassis although is solid but every part has been upgraded, stronger diffs/axles, bigger brakes, HD crossmember, HD bumpers, expensive suspension e.t.c, I would rather a sorted solid steel chassis than a galv chassis with the rest worn out...
