What do you guts paint the rear of the chassis with? The bit that everyone can see below the tailgate/back door. Whatever someone did mine with it seems to be peeling off. (and no, its not rust as it was a new quarter section!)

Any paint you like - as long as it's black! I rubbed mine down and used Hammerite last summer - but the rust has already started to come through in places. Next time I'll get it back to bare metal and use a decent zinc-rich primer followed by black chassis paint.

I use Red Lead Primer, Forth Bridge Brand from Craig and Rose in Edinburgh. Works a treat and can be thinned with thinners for spraying(wear a mask). It takes any type of paint and really works to hold back the rust. Not sure if you can still buy it as I bought 5 litres years ago and have done a few floors/chassis. I made a metal mesh door for my garage last year and used the red lead primer then black smoothite (Hammerite but smooth) and theres no sign of rust.

Did mine with Hammerite Black Stonechip - in the hope that it would be a slightly harder finish.

Allegedly remains slightly flexible to stop it cracking or peeling, and meant to be rust repellent as well.

Only 3 months in, but looking good.

did my whole chassis in hammerite last year, it doesnt crack as most people seem to think.

gets chipped and wear and tear, but I will do it again this year I expect, only took about 2 hours. My mate had a lift at the time so I could get right under it. Pity he doesnt have it anymore.

I bought a "trade" tin of hammerite off ebay and it is fine, about half the price of the branded stuff.

If you paint the chassis with hamerite or something similar, do you have to rub down the chassis before you paint it on or do you just need to get the mud and dirt off but not run down to bare metal? Thanks

depends on how much effort you want to put into it as to what finnish youll get personally ill be taking mine right back to bare metal for the professional finish

at the verry least wire brush it and use a scraper for the big flakes of rust just to make sure there aint no chance of damp getting under the paint:D:D:D

For initial prep I'd recommend:

- Pressure wash using a degreaser and allow to dry
- Remove any loose rust etc. using wire brush/wire brush drill attachment

Whilst you could just use hammerite and it would certainly tidy up the chassis and offer some protection, I'm not sure how it would stand up to slowing existing rust when compared to POR15 or KBS

Also don't forget to treat inside the chassis - plenty of access holes - with Waxoyl, Dinitrol etc - i've yet to find a way to paint inside:D

Ive done mine today.

Used a wire brush/scraper to clean it up then put the hammerite kurust treatment on 1st then coated in hammerite black.

Looks good but now the rest of the back end looks shabby lol

Red oxide primer, then 'Chassis Black' from the local motor factors. Same on the front cross member/bumper.

It's thick, nice gloss finish (but you can get satin i believe), brushes on or will thin to spray. Can go over bare metal, if you don't want to prime, or have missed a bit!

Does exactly what it says on the tin! lol
