Hi

My name is Bruce Taylor and I am a missionary in an african township outside Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal South Africa.

I have a very old Landy that was built up from different parts and he is fondly called "Dennis".

Our ministry supports 392 orphans, widows and caregivers infected or affected by both AIDS and poverty.

In 2004 I did 1 funeral from the community, 2 funerals in 2005 and this year I have conducted 58 funerals, 51 have been as a result of AIDS.

Why am I writing this, well it is because we need help, each day I am taking people either to the hospital or a clinic as they are to poor to get a taxi and too weak to walk there.

It is coming up to our spring which heralds in the new rainy season and the challenges start.

1. The roads are dirt and with any downpour become really sticky.
2. Our workload has increased in terms of transporting people on a daily basis to and from hospital/clinics.
3. Access to there homes aften requires 4x4
4. We need extra carrying capacity to transport people without them getting wet as they currently do on "Dennis"
   

My request isthis: does anyone in this forum know of someone who might be in the position to sponsor us a Defender 110 Tdi(diesel is cheaper for us and easier to get) (5 door) or equivalent

firstly may i say welcome to you bruce and having just looked on your website, may i congratulate you on the great work that you do.as for your request i personally think you are aiming for the wrong audience so to speak. the people on this forum are just everyday people that work for a living and come on here to chat and share their everyday experiences of landrover ownership. i beleive the market you should be looking at is the dealer network, or the specialist landrover suppliers. i do not think that the members of a forum like this one would have any influence on a decision like this request that you are making, whether they know of someone that could help you or not. please do not think i am being derogatory towards you as i am just stating what i beleive to be true. i hope this helps you and your charity. keep up the good work.

Thank you for your input - we really appreciate any advice that you can give us.

With regards to slob's comments, I would be happy to give other people as references who have been supporting our ministry from the UK, Canada, USA and Holland, not only financially but have also given up their time on a voluntary basis to make a difference - most come for a month at a time but one girl (a nurse - who made a huge impact in our community) spent 8 months here and has returned to Canada to save up some more for herself and raise funding to come back and open an AIDS hospice.

This is not a scam and that is why I said that people are more than welcome to come and see what we are doing. And yes it has started raining, last week we had 50mm in a day.

I am sure that some people might get suspicious with requests like ours but my heritage is from the UK with my grandfather is originally from Scotland and came to South Africa with the British Mounted Police. Both he and my Dad have owned Landrovers. I think that they have been part of our family for about 50 - 60 years.

with the amount of scams on the intercon , you can't be too careful. but the thing is like yella says if you are the real deal yer in the wrong place. have you tried askin nelson or his replacments at the head of yer gov?

Hi everyone

Thought that I would report back after my last request. We are very grateful to have received a donation to purchase a Defender 110 Tdi (pictures attached). We used the "new" Landy last Sunday at an open air service on our farm land next to the township that was donated to us in March 2006.

But the better news is that there was enough to purchase a second Landy, a Defender 110 Hardtop. this vehicle had been referred to us after we had taken the first Landy in for COR (Certificate of Roadworthiness).

We praise God that our prayers have been answered.

We are just so ecstatic - we have a couple coming over from the UK in January and they will probably be using one of them. Thanks for the encouragement

just had a thought, try my local council. they must have money to burn. they just erected a new bus shelter (the size of a domestic greenhouse) for 260000 quid.
they often go to africa etc.. to study your problems and my MP is also keen on giving our money to africa.
pity they cant empty my bins properly, or send a policeman round within 2 days,,but never mind about my little problems.

I think that I need to clarify that the 2 landrovers are a 1991 model and a 1990 model
