i'm thinking of fitting a hands free phone system to my p38 DHSE. it already has the Harmon Kardon hifi system. Does anyone know if this hifi is compatible with any blue-tooth type phone system.
thanks

Yes, it is. I have a Nokia 9500 Communicator phone (read standard mobile phone with bluetooth) and I got a Nokia CK-7W car kit for my phone.

Along with that I got a Soundlinx audio mute lead as well. If you have an Alpine head unit you will need this lead OR if you have the Clarion head unit you will need this lead. The lead basically plugs into the back of the head unit and you then plug the original connectors into the new wiring loom. The new wiring loom will mute the radio during a call and play it through the front speakers of the vehicle. Works really well and even though I have a cradle for my phone, in bluetooth mode it works just as well (my sister has used her little Motorola Razr phone in bluetooth mode with it and my friend has some bog standard nokia that he has used with it in bluetooth mode as well).

The new mute lead loom also provides power for the phone kit meaning it really is just plug and play. I installed my system at the beginning of the year and havent looked back since, it works perfectly and is brilliant.

I got all my kit from dashmount.co.uk - helpful people and easy to deal with.

Its easy to install the kit, you just need to be familiar with removing the two side panels of the centre console so you can wire up the new mute lead and thats it really. I also dropped the glovebox down in order to more easily install but you dont HAVE to do that.

Let us know if you need anymore help :)

i got one of these
Portable Bluetooth hands free; Parrot MINIKIT
and i must say it really is very good, very loud and very clear.
and it can go from car to car, or even next to you in the bath
i think a built in car kit would be nice though, these dashmount people seem interesting, did the loom at the back of the radio have the bluetooth built in or was that a seperate item and where's the microphone?

Wills, Thanks for the info. i like the idea of the built in hands free kit. Why do you need the nokia CK 7W kit though? it looks like the'dashmount' wiring loom plays the telephone through your speakers and mutes the stereo. where is the microphone section?
sorry, i'm really thick when it comes to telecommunications!

hi :)

ths forum thread should help RangeRovers.net :: View topic - Fitting Hands Freee Microphone Obviously you can ignore the cradle in that photo as you want bluetooth.

it shows the system im talking about and is what i copied when installing mine. The wiring loom/mute lead is quite literally just that, it connects to the back of the radio and has the existing radio connectors plugged into it. its pricey but there was no way i was having some flashy all singing all dancing multi colour, million band, sat nav chav radio installed in my P38. the black box is because of the Harmon Kardon sound system. It takes the sound input FROM the car kit you have installed and shuts the radio up (with the radio displaying TEL) and then plays the sound through the door speakers, its basically because the HK sound system has amps in the doors rather than the radio and this box just allows the special wiring loom to interface with the system.

the Nokia CK-7W is the car kit itself, you plug in the audio line from the wiring loom into it and it provides the conversation you are having out through the new wiring loom and into the speakers.

I mounted the microphone for my car kit just above the rear view mirror
on that black bit that holds it to the screen and that works really well, everyone car hear me ok. you run the mic line from there, alone the headlining at the top of the screen, down the a-post and back behind the dash.

the car kit also comes with a button to allow you to pres to answer and to press to hang up and adjust the volume and i mounted this right down by the gear shifter just infront of the heated seat button, again, easy reach and pretty much hidden from direct line of sight.

the brains of the CK-7W, the little black box that can connect via bluetooth OR a cradle just goes behind the glovebox, inside the dashboard as shown in the pics on the thread link i posted.

HTH, let us know if you need anymore help :)

that sounds brilliant, its exactly what im after. another toy, im guessing that when you enter your vehicle and turn on ignition your phone and car kit connect automatically via bluetooth?

Actually, YES! lol I bought the car kit but at the time didnt buy the cradle for my phone thinking I would be alright. So for a while I was running it in bluetooth mode as well and it worked like this.

You setup a new profile on your phone to play no key press tones and no SMS tones or anything except for the ringing tone. You then set this profile to activate with a headset type device (thats what the car kit is seen as).

Then all you do is make sure the phone and car kit are properly paired and that the bluetooth is switched ON on the phone and it works like this.

Unlock vehicle, get it, turn on ignition, blue light flashes on little control dial for a second or two as the car kit connects with your phone, then turns solid and you are then connected, any calls received from then are answered with the little silver button and play through the sound system while displaying TEL on the radio if its on. If its not the sound is still played as well so it doesnt make a difference either way. When you finish a call you press the silver button to hang up. When you finish your journey, you stop the vehcile, take key out of ignition, car kit stays on for a few secs and then turns itself off, shown by the little blue light going out. Your phone then reverts back to normal profile. :)

As I said I didnt go with a cradle at the time. During this time I was using it in bluetooth mode I actually got stopped by a policeman. He claimed he saw me using my mobile phone bla bla bla. Infact what he had seen was me driving along with my arm on the arm rest and my head leaning against my hand but he was completely convinced i was on my hpone and wanted to give me a fine. It was only when I showed him the phone system he said 'well this time ill give you the benefit of the doubt'. I was like uh huh. So at that point I went ahead and got the cradle and antenna thingy and that works really well. Can go anywhere and still have a signal now and plus if I get stopped again I can just say, well, look, it cant of been me

Anyway, yes, thats that, lol

yes thats exactly what i want. the nokia ck-7w car kit and the relevant radio loom.
im aware of the bluetooth connection set up as i have this with my parrot minikit, trouble is you have to remember to switch it on and its range is about 10 metres, too good cos if you dont turn it off and get out your still connected and it sings at you when you go in and out of range.
on the hole for £50 its worth its weight in gold as you can take it with you from car to car and its very clear.
i hope they work with LG phones?

hmmm, with the wiring loom i have showed above switching on and off doesnt matter as it provides the Nokia CK-7W the ignition sense voltage. Basically when the ignition is completely off then the car kit is off, as soon as you turn it on to I as if you were going to listen to the radio or something the car kit is then activated.

As for LG phones, not sure. Its worked with all my friends nokias. my sister has a motorla and it works ok with her phone and one friend has a samsung D500 phone (think its the model) and it worked ok with that as well. The only phone ive found it NOT to work with so far no matter how many combinations i tried was my really old Ericcsson R520m, then again that phone never even had a colour display, lol

hmm, so it gets it power from the radio system, dont even have to find a power supply, its looking even better.
its not a problem only being off when keys out so to speak, as i often lock up to wander into a shop and forget to turn my parrot off.
its a strange thing!
i get into my vehicle and try and turn on a parrot!!! (may have been best to keep that to myself)

Hi Wills. I'm playing catchup here.... I'm just about to put a Nokia CK-7W in to my P38 (2002 Vogue) as its still about the best there is. Your link for the interface cable has probably grown a little old and goes to the Dashmount home page; hence I don't know which cable I need (or indeed which head unit I have. How do you tell?). Could you advise which cable is for which? Thanks.

mines fitted with a parrot hands free kit, cuts the radio out when you get a call and the display on the parrot tells you the number or person calling.

I installed a JVC stereo that can cope with all the amps has ipod connection and bluetooth so can connect any phone with bluetooth capabilites plus my 160G ipod is hard wired in too. Had to buy an extra lead to work steering wheel controls but no probs with any speakers either through the head unit or when its connectd to phone. Only downside is if you can call it that is the stereo has to be on to connect to phone and mine always is so no probs.
