It's more likely to be that the swivel ball will be damaged (worn, pitted etc) which in turn wears the seal. To get everything back to 100% i'd reccommend that you change the whole lot, bearings, seals everything. If you have any sort of lift...

Pool of engine oil on the drive! It looks like it is blowing out of the little pipe on the right hand front of the engine, which I believe is for vacuum oil draining. The rubber cap is missing which may mean nothing and may be a red herring...

Well that seems to be the issue. Tell me. If I bridge across the two wires heading for the switch, by passing it , will the brake light come on if all is well? Would be a handy way of keeping the circuit "live" rather than jamming a jack handle...
