Hello everybody,

I am new here, but already I have found this website invaluable for information on sorting out the little problems on my RR!

I have a problem with my EAS on my 1999 Range Rover.

It first started when I was out for a bit of a spirited drive through a country road and all of a sudden there was a rather loud hissing noise and the suspension dropped to the bump stops. (There was no "pop" or any other noise other than the hissing)

Immediately I pulled over to see what had happened but could not find the problem at the road side so drove home about 10 miles on the bump stops, very slowly, and very bumpy!

At first thought, i presumed an air bag had popped on me or a pipe had come off or something, but I seem to be wrong.

There are no error codes showing at all and have not shown since the incident occurred.

Sat on my drive, I tried the system and I could hear it trying but failing to move any of the air bags, so I gave up at this point and called my friend at the garage. I drove the RR to him which is only 2 or 3 miles away and attempted to show him what was happening.

As always happens when you try show somebody something - it doesn't work! And now, no matter how many times we try, with all doors closed etc - the system will not even try to lift the suspension, or make any noises etc.

The weird thing is, when pressing the button to the raised positions - obviusly nothing happens to the EAS but the lights flicker a few times then show a solid orange light and the orange icon on the dashboard comes on (asif it is all working fine).

So far, we have had a look for any obvious signs of a leak in the system and cant find anything visible to the eye, and we have checked the fuses and relays relating to the system and all are fine.

We don't know where to go from here, we have no error codes to go at and nothing visible/audible to go with..

Can anybody help get to the bottom of my problem?

And before everybody shouts at me to "use the search", believe me I am doing so as well, but it is quite hard wording and finding this problem!

Many thanks for your time and any help given would be greatly appreciated!!

So assuming you've thoroughly checked the airbags and air pipes and found nothing, the next thing would be to check the valve block itself (and the pump while you're in there). Also bear in mind that with the car on the bump stops the air bags will be folded, you'll need to extend them on a jack as they often have a hole right in one of the creases.
Well worth getting some schrader valves so you can pull the pipes from the valve block and manually inflate it with a pump to check once and for all if you have any leaks in the system after the valve block. Not expensive and always good to have them in the glove box for emergencies.

Thanks for your reply KevWill!

I will use what you have told me to investigate further and I'l get some of those schrader valves, are they easy to fit and use?

One questions I have though, is if there was a leak would we not hear air escaping and the pump etc working?

There is nothing visible and audible happening when we try raising the car and all the dash lights are saying that it is working properly, even though it is not. There are no fault codes either, should there not at least be something shown on the dash?

Thanks again

Most likely an airbag has failed, not always obvious. Check the compressor output as per Wammers guide in the "How To" section. It's also possible that an exhaust blow has melted an air line.
If it will not do anything now, I suspect it's gone to Hard Fault, you should have a message "slow 35mph" on the dash display. You will need diagnostics (I can suppy) to clear this before it will attempt to do anything.
