Hello, it's time to re-tax and I want to find out if my 1973 SIII might
possibly have bewen build in 1972 (the log book says 1973).
How long did these things take to pass down the Solihull production line?
Where can I find exactly when Land Rover build the old girl?

Also, how you you apply for free road tax from the DVLA, their website
appears to carry absolutely no information on it (or else I'm not looking
hard enough).

Contact "Landrover Historic Vehicles".
They are at Gaydon in Warwickshire.
You will probably have to write to them quoting the chassis/vin number and
they should be able to let you know.
I wrote to them back in 1986 after rebuilding a series one as I didn't have
a registration document and DVLA wanted to issue a Q plate for the vehicle.
They were able to inform me that the vehicle was manufactured in 1956 and
was dispatched to the ministry of supply.
Hope it works for you to.

Ian Prestleton.

If you check out the LR website you'll find a telephone no. for technical
enquires - they should be able to help you with your Landies age...

...as for the other thing - gulp

Once you have evidence of year manufactured, march into your local
DVLA office and say "I'd like this changed please". They _may_ insist
upon changing the registration number, but essentially once you have
the year on the V5, you can tax it in any main Post Office - at not
cost, obviously.

Thankyou all for the advice, I'll get to work on it soon. I'll also submit
my findings to the faq if I get anywhere with it.

The New Zealand system works well - when it hits 40 years old according
to their records it's cheap to licence.

More specifically, the magic words you need on your v5 to get the free
tax are 'taxation class: historic vehicle'

I changed mine when i first got it, though it wasnt quite as
complicated as yours. My v5 already said pre 73 but it wasnt entitled
to free tax, as i found out when i first went to the post office to
try and get my free tax!

Your local DVLA office is shown here:
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/contact/local_offices.htm

I was told to expect big quese, but when i went there in the middle of
the day it only took about 5 minutes. If you take all your documents
with you (mot and insurance) they will issue your free tax disk on the
spot and your v5 will appear in the post later.

When the system was intorduced by the tories, it provided for free- road
fund licence for vehicles built more than 25 years ago.

The current lot froze this, in 1997, (i.e. at 1972). This is yet another
thing that makes me detest 'em.
