Don't knock any manual even a poor one. I went to the dealer in Charlotte NC
this morning with an appointment to have the rear hatch lock in my discovery
replaced. Had taken the door trim off and looked the job over and realized I
needed a morning free of wife, chores, work, and some special tool to do it
myself. Got there and they said they would do it (not before I arrived but
when I was already there) but that it required breaking the old lock out and
the cost would be $355. Mind you I had already bought the lock at over $160
so their $355 was labor and a few rod clips. I opted not to have them do it.
I bought the full set of manuals from British Atlantic when I first bought
the car 9 years ago thinking it would be fun doing some things to it. Well
I never have time --until today. When I got part way home I decided they did
not read the shop manual or "breaking the lock out" would not have been the
method. Who ever heard of a auto maker building a door around a lock? That
led to Harbor Freight which is a discount tool company I frequent. There
after brousing and thinking about what I had seen when I took the trim off I
found what looked like and turned out to be the perfect tool adaptable to
pulling plastic pins in the rocking y that controls the lock. So I went
home. Read the page on body and chassis rear door and within 1 and a half
hours had taken the old out and put in the new. Had I gotten a gasket it
would have save the 10 minutes of very careful pealing of the old gasket off
the old lock.
So don't knock manuals. Mine cost $100 for the set and I save today alone
$255 and had a very inspiring time
..
