Had problems starting when warm always started when cold
Was suggested that I changed points.
Changed them and set them to correct gap now wont start although occassionally fires up for a few secs on what sounds like a few cylinders.
put old points back in still same problem
Any Ideas?

Is the rotor arm on properly?

Is the distributor cap sitting 100% correctly?

Are the points set correctly?

Is the King lead sitting properly?

Is the dwell angle right?

When you replaced the points, did you have to pull hard on the rotor arm to remove it, and if so, did you keep hold of the distributor shaft to make sure you didn't dislodge the advance / retard mechanism?

Hi thanks for your reply just a copy of questions before I have another go at starting him.

1. whats a king lead?
2. If I have moved the advance / retard mechanism how do I reset it.

Cheers Paul

Put the points into the distributor; turn the engine by hand if you can until the centre spindle high point is touching the plastic pickup on the points, now adjust the gap, squirt with wd40 and try.

Hi,

In answer to your questions

The king lead ... it's the one in the middle of the distributor that connects to the coil.
If your rotor arm is stuck on he shaft, and you pull it off without holding the shaft down with a scrwdriver or similar pressed against the shoulder of the spindle you may dislodge the advance retard mechanism or damage the plastic clip. ( Weights and springs under the plate the contacts or pickup coils sits on )

I hope this helps
