Wipers slow after new spindle boxes

Defender 90 300tdi 1995MY

Hi when I got my defender one of the wiper spindles was broken. So last weekend swapped both wiper boxes, new wiper arms and blades too. New cable that goes from the motor to drive the wipers.

Greased up the cable

Put is back together and the wiper worked. (luckily I think, I ran out of time to put all the dash back together) today went out to complete the job and its raining so thought I would use the new wipers. The lever was down in intermittent and the wipers got to 12 o'clock pointing up quickly and then stalled. Tunred them to double speed and slowly they wiped across the full sweep. But there is a squeak like someone running a wet finger down a mirror - I think coming from the motor.

Any ideas as to why they are behaving like this? After working last week. Is it possible to screw the backs on the wiper boxes too tight restricting movement? Did I not grease enough?

With the wipers lifted off the screen they running with a constant squealing

EDIT - after running the wipers off the screen for a while the sequel stopped (it is coming from the motor) so I ran on the screen and sometimes they are fine sometimes they squeal )

p.s. the wiper boxes were not britpart ones and it didn't make the noise or have slow running before.

If noise is coming from the motor it is often a dry bottom bush and a common cause of slow wipers. All new stuff may now mean the motor is having to work harder.

Thanks. I assuming can be cured by lubing. Which bit is the bottom bush? Thanks

The other end from where the drive comes out. Rather than open the whole motor just slacken the two long bolts holding the case together and pry the end plate away enough to get a squirt of oil in there.

well lubing and lubing the shaft that the metal end of the drive goes up and down got rid of the squeal - but unless super wet they a glacial in speed.

Could be motor is just old.

yeah that's my thinking - when I bought it the LH wiper spindle turret was loose and I wonder if that stressed the motor. Once I took that off and ran for a few weeks without it it was fine.... 25 years I guess its just tired :0)

Quick question about the demister hoses. Mine appear to be similar to hoover hose but if they were an inch longer might fit on the demister and in the rubber skirt below.

Has anyone swapped these for aluminium ducting or actually cut up a hoover hose to make longer?

Ref the motor- have you removed and cleaned up the earth cable coming from it? My wipers are very slow on a dry screen too but fine on a bit of drizzle that's normal for tratter wipers.
Agree with the demister hoses, I got new ones when restoring my 110 16yrs ago thinking someone had shortened the originals but ,no, same length. They do fit but it's a faff.

thanks. Yes will do earth next. After all I don’t actually need speed when dry. Although they definitely get better the longer engine is running.

Re hoses thanks. May cut up and old Henry hose to give me more tolerance.
