Hi,

Stupid questions;

1, The 'stop at the bottom' feature on the windscreen wipers doesn't work, what needs replacing to get this working?

2, The feature to switch of the indicators after turning the wheel, should Defenders have a cancel feature? if so , how do I fix this?

Cheers

Rob

Sounds like youve lost a power feed to the "park " side of the motor or its gummed up or just dead , I havent got a wiring scematic of the wiper circuit to hand but will have a look .

The motor is under the cover at the far end of the dashboard on the left side.

Its a standar lucas part, and should have 3 or 4 wires going to it depending on single or double speed.

its the same motor used in most 70-early 90's british cars.

Had exactly the same problem with the one on my MGand the 90. Basiscly there are two causes.

Either the always live power to the motor is not working (if i recall lucas wiring colours this should be purple with a black stripe), or the switch is not working. Check the power first with a meter - unplug the cable, and put the meter between the black (always ground) and the two/three cables in turn - at least one shoudl always be live

The switch is the little platic bit under the motor - you will likly need to remove the motor to do this bit - get some vinel gloves at the point - to do this you have to remove the cable which is a pain in the arse as you have to remove the cover off the motor as I recall the four machine screws have a BA4 head on them (you may find a metric equiv. that works) and then remove the connecting arm from the cable and then remove the cable.

With the motor out, you should be able to remove the switch - it should slide off as it has a small spring clip holding it to the body of the motor with a small plastic peg that sticks out of the top of it. Be very carefull not to snap the peg off when removing.

Now all you have to do is carefully prise the two parts of the switch apart around what looks like a melted seem, but with a small craft knife you should be able to get it to come apart.

The contacts are usualy all corroded up as it is not waterproof, and likely your landy has been through some water in its life/screen leaked etc)

With all the brass contacts shining new again put it all back together and it should work again - somethimes it takes a couple of goes to get it working, and i recomend a quick spary of silicone grease (you can get the cans from maplins) to keep the water out, put a blob of silicone grease (from a tube) on the plug contacts, and put it all back in - for some reaosn that I still can't my head around the wipers always need adjusting even if you don't alter the alignment at all !

As for the wheel and indicators - take the stearing collumn cover off and check the switch and the canceling arms are lined up something may have moved - simple mechanism which should be self explanatory - mide you something may have broken, and you may need a new switch (ebay)

What a pratt I am! The reason the indicators don't cancel is because I fitted a replacement wheel and it didn't have any cancelling bits.

I'll try and fit something tomorrow..
