Hey,

Liam from Ireland here. Recently purchased a 1990 RRC V8, and it seems to be leaking from just behind the distributor, which eventually (when moving) boils off and stinks or (when parked) decides to run down and off the front axle housing, dyeing my crazy paving in the process.
Also, the driver's window doesn't work. I've gone under the storage box - the relay thing looks to be working - sparks in all the right places and an appropriate drain on interior lights with the engine off. There seems to be a noise in the door like the motor trying to move...but nada

it sounds like the valley gasket is leaking on the engine and the window sounds like the motor is jamming or seizing up hope this helps tiga.

Heh - valley gasket? I'll drop it up to my mech to be sure - but before - any failsafe way to see that it is? It is collecting just behind the distributor cap. If anything else is wrong, I want to rebuild the engine anyway. There seems to be a noise coming from under the car - exhaust leak? It's in time with the engine, but is NOT eminating from the Big End.
The coolant reservoir does let out some air after a really long journey, but I'd say this is just it heating...? How do I get the door card off to check the motor? Just yank it?

hi the valley gasket is the gasket that seperates the inlet manifolds/carbs from the top of the hydralic tappets and push rods they have a rubber seal at each end off the block front and rear which do perish and leak oil, look under the carbs any oil/water does the gasket look warped/delaminating,the rocker box cover gaskets leak and there is a o ring on the disi that can perish, the exhaust favour from blowing around the manifold gaskets pain in the ars@ on drivers side, white smoke could be head gasket problem is water hoses pressuring going really hard, you could always take the plugs out look to see if any off them looked washed and are a different colour, not sure about the door card long time since i played with a classic hope this helps tiga.

Right - I have no carbs, it's an EFi engine.
I'll pull the plugs out tomorrow and have a peek - but it didn't do it on the way home, just after I'd washed it

the gasket is the same if its carbs or efi, just wite carbs as i love the carbs good old v8s could it be the air fiter sucked in some water did you jet wash it or did the leads get wet hope this helps tiga

I'd say the leads got wet - I took the oil off from the head, so a bit may well have got into the cylinders

Sounds like you have water in the engine which is moving some sludge

White smoke isn't necessarilly a sign that the head gaskets are going, but water vapour settling in the silencers and pipes. A sure fire way to see if your head gasket is quitting take the expansion bottle top off and run the engine (Warning keep away from all the belts/battery/HT leads) If bubbles of coloured sludge appears your head gasket is on the way out. Also if you change the oil and you have a fair amount of water in it the same.

If the white smoke goes then it's just you've washed your Range Rover and it's moving sludge.

As for the window motor. Take the panel off the door and remove the plastic, you can the access the window motors just check for security of the motors, also try to spray some WD 40 to clean the sludge away.

Hope this helps
