I am still looking into buying a Series 3 Diesel SWB, has anyone got any ideas where I can get one from within the West Midlands area , I am only looking at spending about £1500 ,I dont want to chance Ebay and all local "Land Rover" dealers arent interested in selling anything that isnt shiny , What I really need is a part exchange thats come in and dealers want rid , just looking at minute , funds still en route , would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Ebay, and car and classic always pretty good. Auto trader always tend to be where cars of 4K+ are posted due to the high cost of advertising there.

At that budget though, I dare say you need to be willing to travel. Alot of people wisely say don't buy a car without viewing it first, which means you limit yourself to a small search area. I've owned 5 landys and only one of them I actually viewed before I bought it. (All via ebay). You learn to watch the market for a few months and spot a good one when it comes along for the right price. (Somebody looking for a quick sale or someone naive who doesn't know the true value of what they're selling etc.). I've never had my fingers burnt yet but I've always been willing to travel and take my chances.

Get on eBay or one of the landrover mags web site, go and view loads of varying price ranges (including more than you want to spend) so you will work out what you can get for your bucks

Just been in the same situation to you Neil, albeit looking for a Defender rather than a series. I agree with what Readysalted says regarding ebay and C&C. You need to be 100% on top of eBay and keep searching the 'newly listed' as well as setting up a daily ebay alert and you'll find something soon enough. The longer you keep looking the more savvy you become and you'll soon spot a bargain (or a lemon). I'm not far from Ledbury, but was prepared to travel as far as Bristol in the south and Cannock in the north to see the motors that fitted the bill.

Hope you find something soon, I'm sure you'll find 'the one'.

Looking for a series 3 is getting very frustrating ! I know I will have to stick with it but everything I see on eBay that looks like it should be scrapped is selling for over a thousand pounds . Ive been looking for three weeks now constantly . I hope someone out there is thinking about putting their cheap , local Landy on at this very moment

It's worth looking further afield. A Land Rover is for life not just for Christmas, and all that. It's not like with an everyday budget car purchase where you might try strolling to the local used car dealer to see if there's anything cheap. Compared to the price of a Land Rover, the travel costs are fairly minimal, and it'll be worth it in terms of the greater choice of vehicles available.

I have just bought one off ebay without looking at it. At that budget, it will need work so look at your priorities. For me, I cant weld but im very good with mechanical and electrical. I was very lucky in that I found my 109 on ebay with 20 mins until the finish but I could see from the photos that the chassis and bulkhead were good but the gearbox needed some love.

The seller was true to his word and before handing over my cash, i checked all of the chassis and bulkhead to ensure the seller was true to his word. Ebay has no legal holding if you turn up and it doesn't match the description. You can walk away without paying.

Be reasonable on ebay and read between the lines and you can keep yourself safe.
