What would be the ideal combination

Hi folks,

Just got on here and dropped a post in the intros bit.

I will be looking for a Landy of some sort in the not to distant future, and don`t really have a strict set of criteria as to what it needs to be.
So, I was wondering if anyone on here (I`m sure you all have an opinion on the subject) would like to post their `ideal` Landy. Sort of give me some options to whet my appetite if you like.
My Landy would be used as a daily (not too many miles) some off`roading/green laning, not too bad on the fuel,...............I`ll make a list

1, prefer diesel
2, short wheel base
3, County type, with windows in back (unless there is a reason not to have them)
4, some basic creature comforts, sound deadening etc (I have a WW2 jeep, so I know what basic is)
5, Prob a Defender

So, as regards fuel consumption, and I know that wheel/tyre combos, make a big difference, what would be ideal?
Then there are the Disco` diffs etc

Anyway, I`m sure my ramblings should make some sense............?

Ideal Landy? Is there such a thing? Depending on the individuals requirements..............

You have answered your own question there with your criteria, a defender, there is some mods you can do to make them slightly more efficient, RRC diffs, disco transfer box etc but not a huge difference

Could I respectfully suggest that you consider a Fender 90 County diesel with a few carpets in it?

I'm also looking for my first landy, my ideal would be a 200tdi 90 van or truck cab pick up, mechanicaly sound, decent chassis, long mot a bit of tax and with working door locks!

The rest of it doesn't really matter to me!

I'm looking at one at the moment that might be like that one day

Well I don`t mind a bit of work, I had the 90 county in mind when I posted the thread.
But as the Defender is a little of an unknown to me (Its evolved a little from the WW2 jeep it was sort of based on) I was wondering what to look out for that isn`t obvious.
Then there are the tyres etc.

RUST is your bigest problem look at rear cross member all the way back to spring hangers and out riggers if it's had any wellding done check to see if it's been done right if it high milage ask when cambelt wos last done u dont want that going on u been there done that lol

dont ask about tyres unless you can take a bit of abuse, that question on here has been asked so many times its not even funny, i would suggest BFG all terrains

Things to look for or to check would be, and this is based on my limited experience so far....

Make sure all the documentation is correct, you really don't want to buy a stolen landy!
If work has been done to the vehicle then you want to see receipts for ALL of the work done and for the new parts too, you also want to see as many old m.o.t certs as possible too.
Check, all the, chassis numbers, vin no. etc match up with the paper work!

Be very wary of people who are selling a vehicle they have not owned for very long and try and find one still in its original paint if you can!

DO NOT BUY A LAND ROVER OFF GYPSIES OR DIRECT 4X4 NEAR ROSS ON WYE!!!!!

Join a land rover owners club!!!!!

the mechanical stuff and the chassis you are best off taking a GOOD mechanic or some one who knows their onions about land rovers along with you if you can!

Wheels and tyres? Who cares so long as it has road legal boots on it when you buy it, you are going to be spending money on it no matter what you buy so you can sort that out later, also see JOIN A LAND ROVER OWNERS CLUB!

Like I say I have limited experience and I don't even own a landy yet but I hope some of this helps.

P.s also buy a set of thermals and some water proof trousers for long journeys!
