what the chuff is limp mode

My TD5 is driving like a bag of spanners,ive had it to the local l/r garage and he reckons the gearbox has put itself in limp mode and meaning that it is pulling away in 3rd gear [auto by the way] the revs are there but no power or drive.Has anyone heard of this and do they know a cure for it.Help is needed hear please.
