Yes ,choke warning light switch, it would have been clipped to the choke cable at a point where movement of the inner cable would trigger it.

Yes, recon it was only fitted to late 2a's.

Choke light switch, I've one on my '81 109. I use it to activate the TDI cold start relay and glow plug light.
+1. Got one on my s3 109 petrol from 1981. Was cheap to replace when mine packed in.

Thanks very much to everyone who replied. Very helpful...... I now know what it is. It also solves another problem, ie. my choke warning light is always on, even when the choke is fully in. So now I will figure out a way of reconnecting this switch so the light works properly.

You will need the correct cable with a little gap for the switch to fit in, often this cable has been replace by a standard one.
The way the system worked was you pulled out the choke to start but light did not come on, then when the engine warmed a switch/sensor on the engine made the light come on reminding you to put it in, this operated the little switch cutting the link to the engine switch/sensor.

Thanks, that's useful info. Didn't know any of that.
My set up is a lot simpler. Just choke light connected to the cable switch. When you pull the cable the light comes on. When you push it back it goes off. So it’s lit when the choke is on no matter what temp the engine - just reminds you you have the choke on. You do still need the cable with the break in it to fit the switch onto but you don’t need any engine sensors if set up like mine (which may well not be correct but it’s how mine has always been. )

I recon most are like yours TS. My 69 2a said system above. When series 3 arrived it was dropped.
Thanks for the info. I think what's happened with mine is that the OE choke cable has been replaced with an ordinary cable and the warning light switch has just been left hanging in mid-air!

If you have the original cable the point for the switch with the hole in the outer is about 6" engine side of the bulkhead
