Well Rachel has agreed I can bugger off on my own again next year, so I'll be doing something, but I was thinking Russia on a Honda 90 or something bonkers.... But I can always drive aroudnd Europe thats easy.
Mike, I spend less that £2k, £3.5 was it all the food you had?

Perhaps I got my figures wrong. it might have been £1750 between the two of us. ( Gerald and me) I know £1750 is there somewhere. In that case I'm ready to go again. Don't think I fancy Russian on a C90 though. I would fall asleep on it, plus there wouldn't be enough room for all my provisions. How about Mongolia?

MONGOLIA!!!! It's worth the miles to get there. Big, wide and open space.
I did the Mongol Rally last year in a VW Polo. We didn't quite get to Mongolia, but had an amazing time. Something I'll never ever forget.
Expedition wise, my plan is nothing much this year, a trip to a music festival in Lisbon Portugal, then driving across the USA next year. My Defender is getting sold due to lack of use and to fund another project but I'll probably buy something else at some point though.

We actually cheated a lot and stayed in hotels. It is amazing which countries TripAdvisor works in!
I think the next project will be a 110 or landcruiser

Good luck with your next project. I found a 90 just a bit to small. On our trip to Morocco there was one 90 and that was the one that kept breaking down. The 110's sailed through it all as did the Discovery.
daft question , how would u guys rate the D3 for expeditions plse
always considered the defenders to be the king of all landies ,
never had a disco before and would be good to know in how they compare of reliability, toughness and ability compared to a fender
aplogises asking a daft question, or course there's always sites that give u a general review but nothing like people that actually go on these expeditions
are they good in stock form or req general mods

The Discovery on our trip to Morocco coped very well. See the blog kept by Chris Suddell. http://land-rover-discovery-1.blogspot.fr/2014/04/day-2-morocco-trip.html
It went everywhere the 110's did without any problems. The 90 broke down and had to be towed out of the desert and the P38 had electrical and over heating problems but kept going carefully nursed along.
The Disco was more comfortable than a Defender but the Defender had a larger load area.
My personal preference would be a 110 when the going gets really tough, but the Disco is more comfortable as an every day vehicle and will handle most situations..

Yesterday evening my wife and I went off in our camper van for a picnic down by the canal in Roanne. I had recently up graded my leisure battery to a GEL battery and had to change the charger and Solar panel controller so wanted to test it out before going off on a loner trip. All worked fine.
Down by the canal there are loads of English folk on there canal barges that spend the summer over here in France. I got talking with one couple who had a lovely 4X4 Mercedes Truck with camper box section on the back. It looked like a large military type of vehicle. not sure how big it was , but must be at least a 15 ton truck. Looked great. They have just come back from spending 10 weeks in Morocco in the desert. I asked them if they had any problems to which they replied " no problems at all" they said the met loads of other people doing the same thing and had a great time. They spend several weeks on there own and several with other people they met up with out there. They said there was loads of Europeans out there. They have being going out there for the winter for the last several years. They did say That the desert is becoming more tame with tarmac roads appearing everywhere. They were on one stretch of the desert thinking they were miles away from everyone when they suddenly realised a few meters away running parallel to them was a tarmac road.
So if you want to enjoy the desert now is the time to go before it becomes covered in highways where you can do it in a camper or a normal car.

As for a Disco 3, all Dicso's etc are ok as long as they do not break down. For non 200-300tdi vehicles its going to get a little tricker to get spares out there. But then again the cars are a lot more modern.
I re-watched the video, I forgot how much fun that bit was.
As for the people doing extreem off roading, its absolutely fing stupid to do any of that when you are out in the middle of nowhere, if it goes wrong it will go wrong big time.

know what u mean and hope they have plenty of spares around, ref them doing that type of extreme off roading
have been going through my D3 as much as possible, list is getting longer, lol
so that i can at least do some preventive maintaining on it
decided i'm going to fit all new discs and pads all round
won't get the drilled or slotted ones, never been keen on them, always worried of small stones or getting hairline cracks between the drill holes , will fit all oem , along with all new brake hoses
then i know it's all done and dusted
pleased all the cam belts etc are all done now
