had an annoying squeek from the pas pump belt on my 200 tdi disco, when i had a look i could see the bottom pulley wheel wasn't running true, so off i went to a local garage and he couldn't get the pulley off, so i went to the local landy independent bloke, when he looked he said it looks like the crank is bent, how can this be, surely the engine wouldn't run with a bent crank, any advice ??

when you look at the base of the pulley,( by that i mean the part nearest the engine block ) you can see that wobbling too, it's not just the front bit that the belt runs in

is it just the larger diameter part of the pulley, or can you see the centre where the bolt is? The reason i ask is that the pulley is in 2 parts with a rubber sandwich between them, this could be failing and causing the out of true that has recently started.

yer should contact trading standards and the tv folk. then go back to him and ask how much it will cost to put right. if he put a £ sign in front of his phone number it could make an interesting 1/2 tv show

i don't think it can be seated on the woodruff key as stig suggested as it hasn't been removed in all the time i've had it ( 14 months ) i hope it's just the rubber as mentioned in the next post by stig

wot i meant was that the bolt can back off over time if it has not bin titened properly, this then allows the pulley to chatter against the woody key, which in turn can wear away the crank and the pulley, but normally shows up as bien a loose puley not just a wobbly one.

probably find you harmonic balancer has **** itself, if it was loose on the crank they usually make a horrible noise - gets worse just before the whole lot flies through your radiator. Bent crank, not unless you jacked the car up by the pulley last time you swapped tyres, even thats not likely & the vibration would make the thing undrivable. Find yourself a new mechanic that isn't trying to put his kids thru college at your expense....

had word from the garage today, they managed to get the pulley off and found that it was worn inside, the end of the crank is slightly worn but he doesn't think it'll be a problem, hopefully get it back tomorrow as i'm supposed to be going away for the weekend

got the disco back yesterday, with a whopping big bill too, the pulley/damper part had worn the end of the crank, but the timing gear thing on the crank was also knackered, so it's all been replaced and now it's running like a new engine, i hadn't noticed how rough it had been running till i got it back running right
