Hannibal - our 1997 D1 has a problem. When reversing I put my foot on the clutch slowing from 3mph to standstill and it feels tight-loose-tight-loose as if the hardy spicer has a tight spot. Changed all three u/j's and the donut and it's still the same. Gearbox has a slight buzz going second to third and third to second at times but no other noises. 180k miler. Any ideas?

From 3mph to standstill it could be anything in the drivetrain, dry wheel bearing, tight diff, stiff seals ... I'd get it on axle stands without the wheels and play with the turny bits, comparing one to the other in a process of elimination ... :)

Funny that it only does it in reverse. Can't see it being a seal or a wheel bearing as when it gets to the tight bit its enuff to stop the car from 3mph. Changed all the oils diffs, tx box and box, and engine, regreased the wheel bearings etc before we went to Suisse two weeks ago and nothing nasty came out. S'pose I'll find out. If it ain't broke.....springs to mind but the missus is going to Belgium at the end of the month.

It's one of the gearboxes for sure. Just tried reversing down a shallow hill. Clutch pedal down and freewheeling slowly, Tight-loose- tiiiggghttttt and stopped dead. Knocked it into neutral (tough to shift) and the old girl starts to roll back freely. Now I have that old dilemma. Get the boxes reconditioned for the price of the car or take yer chances wiv a scrapper .

As you've deducted it's one of the gearboxes, have you checked them both for oil? How long has the existing oil been in? First step I think would be a full oil change .. but remove filler plugs before emptying ... ;)

Hi Paul,
Changed em both before I left for Suisse three weeks ago. ATF in the main box and sae 90 in the tx case. Didn't do the filters tho.
At 180,000 miles the old boy probably needs a box change

Though it does appear to be reverse only related - as @Flossie says, its deffo worth stripping the handbrake to make sure there are no gremlins lurking within

its possibly the reverse gear/needle roller seizing on the main shaft - diag here:-

I would change the oil for MTF and see what this achieves - you might have to do it a couple of times to flush any crud out of the box...

P.S. - do you have cooler on the box? if not - IMHO, it's worth fitting one either now or as part of the rebuild.....
