just gone to the unit to make a start on the disco today (only took 6 weeks like ) took the top off my header tank to check on the level and it had dropped about 3 inch from when i used it, cant spot no leaks and only really had to top it up every few hundred miles, personally i am thinking possible core plug leak??? anyone got any clues?
when driving engine doesnt get no were near hot, circulation is good, and heaters blow hot and not a sign of steam from engine bay, and or water/oil mix.

Check out my fred

Mine was losing water to the extent that after about 2 months the heaters would not blow hot air meaning the water level had dropped to a level where there wasnt enough to get up to the matrix. At this point I would put about 4-5 pints in and it would be OK for another 2 months. It recently got worse and started pouring lots of water out. The very small and insignificant water loss ended up a bit more dramatic and was pinpointed to the seam on the wheel arch side of the expansion tank.

In your case with it sitting for 6 weeks, is it possible that the water level has 'settled' and the air moved around and altered the level?

Just being optimistic for you!

yer doubt its anything serious like, read your thread before which reminded me to post, i keep an eye on my levels at leaste once a week anyway (maybe cause its british!) haha so i doubt its anything more than a lil leak into the bell housing from the core plug but cant spot it, just after general experiences and thoughts, cheers for the reply rev.

Er yes, I think I will be a bit more vigilant at looking at the levels more often, I have been going on the theory that if the heater works theres water in it. However, the heater stopped working and I still didnt put water in this time! Hopefully new expansion tank will sort things out.

Regarding yours. Is there a wading plug opening on the bellhousing? if so stick it in and leave it there for a few days then when you remove it if thers a drip or two then you have your answer. Or leave the plug in and have a wet clutch!

breather pipes an all wading plugs for me, aint been arsed going to work on it today so no new revelations this end, i mean i hear they do use a bit of water now and again anyway but am almost certain this is from being stood up.
